The weakness of the MR-S vs. the Miata was it's macstrut suspension and open differential. On the SCCA autocross scene, the MR-S drivers were a force in C-Stock against the 1999 Sport Package Miatas, but always fell short of the top prize. That was the SCCA Solo National Championship. The Miatas had a Torsen limited slip differentials and double A-arm suspension while the MR-S came with MacPherson struts and and open differential. The Miata drivers could stay on throttle through long turns where the MR-S would get wheel spin. The MR-S was the better sprinter of the two and a touch lighter though. I would expect it to do better on a long road course.

I had this car for 13 years and sadly my boyfriend totaled it last year (he's okay but the car was toast. Mine was black and so good looking, and the clutchless gear shifting was super cool. I miss that convertible top so much You can haul a lot of stuff in the car with the top down, like lumber and long pipes, though people will laugh at you when you do. Anyway, the thing that was bad about this car was if you suddenly need torque and the car was in a high gear you are out of luck. You can't speed up till you downshift and that took too much time. I have an electric Fiat now and love it, but I miss that soft top of the Spyder a lot

I have an '89 T-Top in Toyota Super Red with less than 53K original miles. It's like a new car. Only flaw is the leather seat on the driver's seat has some cracks. The MKI. '84-'89. has a trunk in back and a frunk in front. There's actually quite a bit of storage space. Looked like you had a good time driving the Spider Doug. No. It's not a fast car. Mine is probably even slower. But like the Miata, the size of the car and the low seating position makes the car handle like a go-kart and exudes the feeling of going fast even when you aren't. The MR2 is wildly fun to drive

I didn't forget about the Spyder. It was my dream car when I was in middle school and I owned a poster of one. I finally got a good deal on one when I turned 29 and have been driving mine ever since. Turns more heads than than most anything else on the road in my area, and the guilt-free fun of a car that is rock solid mechanically, good on gas, and simple to find parts for (except for that hardtop option)- makes it a working man's dream turned reality. Hearing that buzz saw engine noise behind my head never gets old.

I bought a 2000 MR2 Spyder in 2005 and still drive it every day. Most fun car I ever bought. I use it as a commuter car to go to work, and it has 195, 000 miles on it now. It has a 5 speed manual transmission, not a lot of power, but it handles curves like a champ. Great of gas too. So much fun on mountain roads with the top down, or trips to the beach. The car is tiny and there is no trunk, and the engine and road noises are loud on the freeway, but I still love it.

At 51yrs old, I've had a lot of cars, and this was, by far, the most unreliable. engine sludge, failed cats, engine fire, and various parts constantly breaking. I made the mistake of buying it before the first one was in the U. S. On paper, I thought it would be a little Ferrari. I swear. the print advertisement for this car at the time said This is the car that's meant to be driven fast. No, no, no.

All your comments and reviews are useless and do not surprise me anymore because Toyota doesn't make this model anymore and it's so disappointing. They should have installed a bigger engine like a Camry engine and an option of automatic transmission or a turbo or supercharged engine instead of phasing out the model. I like the mid-engine set up. Unable to compete with the Miata.

Driving a small sports car on flat, straight Texas roads and complaining that it doesn't have enough power is sort of rich. That's not what it was designed to do. When you noticed how precise the steering is, that was for twisty mountain roads. Unless you are throwing the car around curves you aren't getting in to what the car is good at and was designed for.

The author did not understand the car, maybe it's because he is American. (no offense) I had an MR2 (facelift) and it was a very reliable every-day car that was fun from the moment you entered the car. It is not a sports car and it did not want to be one, I think. But when you hit the gas real hard, it brings a smile on your face on each corner. every day. :-)
