FLETCHER JONES MOTORCARS The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is now the cheapest Mercedes-Benz. I'm reviewing the A-Class to show you around the new baby Benz, and I'm showing you all the quirks and features of the Mercedes-Benz A220 -- and all of its technology

You know, here in Europe, the A class used to be a laughingstock, mocked for being ugly, overpriced and tremendously prone to rollover. An old time classic meme here was the A class having an additional set of wheels on the roof to fix the issue as an option. In all fairness, it was a poor attempt by Mercedes really failing to find a vibe to be a more casual, which is kinda preposterous with that kind of brand image and brand history. But recently, they really upped their game big time. I have the feeling that they want to directly compete with Volkswagen those days. Volkswagen went from the bottom-up in terms of price and features, while Mercedes seems to want to go the top-down way. At the moment here in France, they are marketting A class and B class like crazy, with a mantra about being Mercedes for actual people and not super rich, old people. I think that new A class is really nice in that prospect, directly targeting younger active potential customers, not in the market for an E or even a C class. There IS a market for people wanting some luxury in a compact car in Europe. The wealthiest people here live in city centers and not in the suburbs contrary to the USA. And since European cities are extremely compact compared to American ones, it's often a nightmare to go around and park with a full sedan. People with enough money don't want to be seen at a street corner with a Dacia Logan or Renault Twingo yet that market was not really properly targeted earlier. If Mercedes is able one day to have the luxury of an S class in a compact car, they'll win big time in Europe. For America, those cars will always be confidential I guess, since outside some rare densely populated places like NYC, there is still no real need for a compact car, as space is still plentiful.

Hi Doug DeMuro, I really enjoyed your review of this new A class. I wanted to point out one thing with regards to the Hey Mercedes test. When you were asking it about the giraffe, the reason it was not working is for online features to work, the car must first be connect to a Me Mercedes Connect account. This will enable the online search feature for Hey Mercedes and that was also shown on the the screen when you were asking it, it was displayed as Online Services Currently Unavailable Please check your Mercedes me Settings. I tried the same question on my A class, once it was connected, and it worked. I am also able to ask it weather related questions. Again, I really enjoyed this review, and can't wait to see your GLE review.

Class A W177 owner here. The car has an amazing design but the materials have poor quality in a couple of weeks you will start to ear a lot of parasite noises coming from behind the MBUX. The 180d for some reason consumes a lot of engine oil. Every 10 000 km my car ask's for 1 litre of oil. But the worst of all is fuel sloshing that the dealers and even the Mercedes customer service insist that is caracteristic and not a problem that they have to solve, although in my case it only apeared 2 months after buying the car. Great looking car but the quality control and service from Mercedes has seen better days.

Good thing Mercedes made a nice looking car that's affordable (yes, despite the review I personally think this is a very very nice looking car. Kia and Hyundai are offering some stiff competitions now, and I'm wondering if this model is Mercedes' answer. I'd still prefer Mercedes (call me vain but its name still hold quite a bit of weight) but only thing holding me back is its predicted reliability. Hope see some unbiased follow up reviews of this car's reliability.

Wanna know why they chose this car to be? We already do have the A class hatchback over here in Germany. There are markets that want sedans though, like china for example. This is why they chose to put in a 4 door sedan. The A45/A45s are planned as hatchbacks only by the way. The new GLA is also coming and due to the boom in SUV sales they also released the GLB, a compact 7 seater SUV, based on the newer MFA.

Seems fairly cheap (no under hood insulator, that's chintzy, plus most of the review is about the screens. All that screen tech really adds very little to the experience. In fact, it would take longer to operate many function vs. having hard button interfaces.

In what world a sub 7s acceleration only gets you 2 out of ten? If you score 5 seconds (or less) 10 points and subtract 1 point for each additional half second, you get 4 or 5 points at least. Maybe you should drive a wider selection of cars real people buy.

Pretty disappointed. I feel like Doug is giving Mercedes a nine out of ten for paying off his house in this obvious paid for review. Didn't even hear him mention the check engine light on a brand new car or Mercedes history of unreliable cars.

meh. no thanks. cheapest mercedes probably has horrible reliabilty. since even most mercedes that are 100k+ have horrible reliability anyway. this is just for those people that wanna get it just to say they own a benz

This particular revision must have struck a nerve with people as the hatchback version is like THE hottest car on the market right now. They are literally everywhere I go, in Europe at least.
