I'll keep it brief. Always loved engines. Cut my hot-rod teeth modding my lawn tractor when I was 12. Then it was minibikes to motorcycles to cars. Somehow lived into middle age before discovering track days on 2 and 4 wheels. I will drive half a continent to visit a good road. Then getting to that point that I could afford genuinely fast cars and the growing MC collection I picked up an old high mileage LEAF _AS A JOKE_
That changed everything. Seriously, everything else suddenly felt outdated, even though that Nissan wasn't in good shape it had possibilities. Today people put that Leaf motor in other things. Anyway, it opened my eyes and got me started.
Tesla is an insult to its customers, like the car itself is an ugly afterthought to hold the tech (and attitude.
Today I ride an electric motorcycle that has a scary 140 lb-ft electric motor (and 4 or 5 gas bikes.
Today I drive an 800hp sub-11 second Lucid Air GT that is a beast, will slap around any car I've ever owned on the street while being comfortable and roomy for the family.
Not for you? go drive a Taycan or an Audi etron RS. Drive that Polestar 2. Best of all there is a whole community of builders with new ideas for customs (see Rich Rebuilds T-bucket EV swap. And the electric sportscars are coming.
Don't fear change. Never stop learning.

In CA is is probably more feasible. Doug have you seen the video of a mach e mustang, telsa, and some other ev. They had a place to go to and all left at 10 min intervals. The mach e took 14-17 hours for a 5 hour trip. The telsa did it in 4 hr 40+ mins. Reason is that mach e has to use American electric and those stations are horrible and are not updated as good as telsa systems who also have problems like not enough stalls and not updating. It takes 9-11 years for the pollution of creating the battery, the mining, the transport to equal 10 years of running an ICE car, which by that time the ICE might need a transmission service where an electric car will need an 11k-25k+ battery pack. Look at all the changes even in CA that you need to make to have an electric car work in your life. My AMG is a blast (22mpg) and so are my z400 (62mpg) and my z650( 55mpg) motorcycles for my little 7-12 mins between the hospital and my house. Those 3 vehicles also didn't cost 60k

I'm currently spending 320-350/m on gas just getting to and from work and closer 425/m with my other errands/gig work. I drive a V6 sedan the gets 19-23mpg (never use the highway. I used to have an newer ATS and I'm so glad I sold that at the peak of car values. If I still had that as my daily driver because my expenses would have literally been over 1, 000+/m to drive (car payment+gas+insurance+maintenance.
With and electric car I could have the payment, charging, insurance, and still be under 500/m and more acceleration than my current car. This should be likely less than what I'm spending currently on my v6 sedan or or at least or at least equal to and still have a significantly newer car.
Thankfully I have a weekend/fair weather car that runs on e85 lol that makes over 400 real life is all about balance I suppose lol

For traveling, EV s are awful. The whole 40 minute charging while you have lunch only even works if you find a place that even has a the ability for you to charge your car, which most small towns you encounter on a cross country drive will not. I go back and forth between Denver and Phoenix quite often, and I determined that it would take at least 4 days to make that drive in an EV, assuming your stops have good enough power supplies, and assuming your charging cable isn t stolen in the middle of the night, which in most cities it certainly would be. The 40 minute charging only applies to the specific charging stations which most towns do not have. Otherwise it could take hours to charge your car. It is simply unrealistic and impractical to drive an EV any long distance.

ive done a return trip that was combined 550km/340miles with a lot of elevation change(i actually climbed up to 1500m/4900feet not once but twice on the way there to avoid tunnel fees. i did it with a 30kWh Leaf so its definetly not impossible to do with a modern 60+kWh EV. in fact i suspect charging would amount to either having a destination charger or taking a single toilet brake next to a high powered charger. as for drives across US: they have been done but if u r really capable of more or less driving from sunrise to sunset, they might add some time. my friends objection to getting an EV is the fact that the longest trip he takes regularly is already 17h long so adding a bunch of charging stops isn't an option. rare cases but they do exist.

I'm thinking about getting an electric in like 3-5 years. I'm right in the target demo for one: urban condo, live 10 minutes from my job, drive waaay less than 40 miles a day. The only thing is I don't have a garage or driveway but since I'd probably only have to charge it once every couple weeks I don't think that'll be a problem. I'm also not interested in Tesla's, the styling is too boring and I don't like the interior design with one big screen for everything. I'm really interested in the new Kia Niro that's coming out but if money was unlimited I'd probably get a Taycan.

Lol I m not surprised at all that you would buy an EV. You claim to be a car enthusiast but it s more of a spectators point of view. You don t build your cars, service them or modify them. Other car enthusiasts are actually participants. They build and their connection runs so much deeper than your own love for cars. I m not against EV at all I think they are amazing but I m 50 years old and I have great respect for mechanical things and love old school. If I owned an EV I would think of it as an appliance and not a family member like I do with many of the cars I own.

I m sorry but I want my everyday driver to be fun and sporty. Of course where I live there is no heavy traffic and we have a new high speed 6 lane 70 mph freeway kind of in the middle of nowhere. Driving is my zen. I love driving so much. I m 45 but I still love to pin my Audi to see how fast I can be going before I leave the freeway on ramp. I love to take the on ramp corners like an F1 car at Nurburgring. Yeah I m sounding pretty immature here but I don t care I just love the feeling of a turbo hitting its power band and throwing you back in the seat.
