Don't put a wreath on your grill. I did it years ago and I was pulling spruce needles out of the radiator and engine compartment for the next 15 years I had that car. Those tiny little needles got everywhere and then actually seemed to multiply. To be fair they really didn't cause any mechanical problems, but it was annoying to have them fall out whenever I loosened or moved anything under the hood. And although the radiator was full of needles, it never overheated. So if the Christmas spirit moves you to hang a wreath in front of your grill, it likely won't hurt your car, but your mechanic just might get a little Grinchy about fixing your car.

Scotty, I've seen several videos where people have tested the differences between the lower octane and the higher octane gas at the pump. In every video I seen the results came out to there was no difference between any of them besides the higher octane actually produced more greenhouse gases. That being said why do some cars require a certain octane and what's your opinion on the differences between the 85 87 and 89 at the pump?

Hey Scotty, I have a bit of an electrical problem I was hoping you could help with a bit of advice? My car shows 13. 5-13. 8V on the battery / alternator while I'm idling, but as I start to rev the engine, the voltage starts to drop to below 12v and the indicator light (looks like a car battery) lights up on the dashboard. Is my alternator starting to go bad or could it be something else I can check?

Americans are spoiled, e. g, when a really reliable, cheap car was introduced in '88 it was boycotted. The Daihatsu Charade was perfect for the frugal person. I bought one and drove it 80, 000 without any maintenance, getting 46mpg. I sold it to a kid whose uncle was from India and he told me it was very popular there. It was the #1 seller in Japan. It was too much shifting (5 speed) in traffic.

In europe we have this new E10 fuel, meaning theres 10% ethanol in it. My car, being a 1996 VW polo, runs awful on that stuff. The standard was E5, 5 % ethanol. E10 dissolves rubbers in the engine, destroys fuel pumps and filters which is a fact and has been tested. So now Im forced to pump 98 octane which still has E5 instead of the older 95 octane. So in this case it does run better.

VW Golf was once the Queen of Battle. Most exported car in the world in the 1990's. Put 600, 000+ miles on a new '89 one. Still running when I sold it to local kid. My 1995 only lasted 300, 000 miles. (I truly expected more) All electronics began to fail. In 2010 switched to Hyundai Accent and have 267, 000 miles and going strong. All had manual transmissions and frequent oil changes.

I have seen some engine swaps into Gremlins, and AMC had the X-V8 option on those. You should be able to get springs and a beefy sway bar for one. Watch for metal fatigue on those, particularly on the front shock towers. I had a '74 Ambassador wagon that the shock tower cracked and bent inward towards the engine. The person who welded it said that this was a problem with them.

in California 100 octane is illegal to use in a vehicle that is run on any public road or highway. As well as any form of race fuel like 110 or 115 VHT race fuel. If a gas station actually has it on a pump it will have a sign above it that it is for recreational use only. Like in Boats, Off road vehicles and race cars. All used on private roads grounds and water ways.
