The Truth About All Wheel Drive Cars MJA: As I stated in the original upload, this presentation conflates two disparate traction systems, that of AWD (thinkercedes 4Matic system or Audi Quattro) with traditional 4x4 sustems like the Gelandewagen. Modern AWD systems normally provide traction to the front wheels unless the system senses slippage so they are comparable in economy to the FWD variant. I live in northern Utah and would not trade the security of AWD for my winter commute.

Thumbs down. I had my 04 forester for 2 years AWD 5 speed. Good MPG 30 full tank in snow doesn't get stuck at all, takes off faster then fwd and rwd no peels grips the road and goes. Some people like to drift so prefer rwd, honda guys who like street racing prefer fwd for burnouts etc. People like me who want a car thats good in all weathers (east coast) prefer AWD. fwd in snow suck rwd in Snow really sucks.

Yes 4wd does require a little extra maintenance. But Id rather have 4wd here in NH. I have a mid size pickup. And I much rather a vehicle with 4wd then AWD. 4wd is also cheaper to maintain then AWD. There is a difference between the two

Proper 4x4 like the Torsten AUDI Quattro shown also works just as well during deceleration. Modern haldex Quattro, x drive, 4 magic AWD are reactive garbage that only work during acceleration and when already wheel spinning.

In the midwest I've always had FWD and never once got stuck. 6-8 inches of snow, even a little car can handle it. Mountain passes may be a different story. 10+ and you're staying home anyway so it doesn't matter.

All wheel drive is nice here in CO. But front-wheel drive is perfectly adequate and my best-ever car in the snow was an E30 BMW ('89 325i) with good snow tires. That car was a blast in the white stuff.

Scotty, you should make a video on LSD diff. and Helical diff. for front wheel drive. could a FWD be good enough in the canadian snow with just a Helical diff. on a Corolla and avoid buying a Subaru?
reply

I understand generally FWD and even RWD will get you where you need to go. In Wisconsin, the conditions in the winter especially outside the city AWD makes a difference.

I live in Colorado just need Quattro for winter and i can also daily the same car in summer, and I dont have to play with the traction controls or anything

What's wrong with you Scotty? When mechanics started decide what kind of cars ppl buy? Time are always changing and cars also. Make ur self an upgrade.
