Yeah I knew it was the head gasket but if your little mechanical and you really want to keep the car running good for many years. It's not that hard to put a new head gasket in definitely a fair bit of wrenching but if you have a day or two and a little bit of know-how it's pretty easy to do on a Corolla or most of the little 4 Banger cars but if you don't know what you're doing or the car is already to far gone put in the stop leak like Scotty did if the head gaskets not too bad it will work but if you overheat the motor half-dozen times she's done.

Yea, power windows work, but door lock actuators don't usually work on Toyotas. They also refuse to change the design. I worked at a dealership, amazing how many Tundras had to have lock actuators replaced, usually just out of warranty. And this was over many model years. Oh yea, and starters, and secondary air injection pumps. etc. Not cheap fixes either, 1200 starter (have to remove exhaust) 500 for door lock actuators. And then there are all the recalls. I'll stick with my '14 Fiat 500L 150k miles, only normal maintenance and 1 airbag recall.

Scotty, couldn't you just unbolt the head and use some high temp silicone to stop the leak? Also that corolla still looks great for a project car, Just buy a cheap stereo( i have seen some new for USD 50 or less), some plastic door handles from online and maybe a spraygun and cheap compressor to do some diy paint work or Get someone who wants to learn how to paint cars to do it as a project. Clean up those headlights and you have a Decent car. A little TLC is all that car needs instead of everyone beating the crap out of it.

Scotty I love your show it's like being able to talk to my uncle who's been a Master Mechanic for all of his life. Question when you go out looking for a new larger family vehicle for traveling a minivan or an SUV what do you think is important to look for in those purchases and how do I know whether buying something new versus used is the better option? I've noticed that it's hard to find tickly minivans with low mileage and given that some of these weird terms are happening I've been considering buying a new vehicle instead

A long time ago now one of my friends had a 1977 Toyota Corolla wagon that he bought for next to nothing from his uncle. It already had high mileage on it, the paint was fading, it had a couple of scratches in it, but none of that mattered. It still ran like new. It was the most unexciting car ever but it got him where he needed to go and it never broke down on him.

Scotty, I have a 2002 Subaru Legacy with 212, 000 miles. It's had a replacement engine at 100, 000 by the dealer. Runs great, it's my daily driver. I'm concerned that the head gasket is going to go out soon. Can I pre-preemptively put head gasket sealant like you did in this video? I live in Washington State so I need to be able to run the sealant with antifreeze.

I m not ever buying a Toyota again lol. My 07 matrix has had 3 major oil leaks in the past 5 months and it only has 100k miles. My parents were original owners ect and I change my oil every 2k miles and do all maintenance on time so it s not like I abuse it. Going Honda next car this cars put me off for good on Toyota

I love my beater car. it has 317, 000 miles its a 91 Olds 98 I have had for 27 years. 7 years ago the transmission died. I went out to a junk yard and dropped one for 75 and put it in and it's still going as we speak. the family hates it, but it's a reliable spare vehicle for anyone that has the need. :)

Used to have a 96 Camry with 3. 0 V6. That car had a lot of go-power but I was talked into getting rid of her after catalytic converter crapped out & oil leaked. If I knew what I know now about auto repair (& Toyotas for that matter) I woulda hung onto her and swapped engine with a low mileage JDM engine.
