12 volt relays are that, 12 volts. They DO NOT operate on 5 volts, and they are not safety devices scotty. Ive been an professional mechanic for 25 years and I know more than you do? Come on Scotty, relays are small load devices used to control large loads, the controllers will still send 12 volts to operate that relay, which is a small load, roughly. 7 ohms, the controller does not send little voltage, voltage and amperage is NOT the same thing, a small load requires very few amps to operate, ever heard og OHMs law scotty? The high load side in the relay is just contacts that close whenever the relays magnetic field is activated, allowing high amperage to flow to device being controlled. Maybe I should start my own youtube channel, since you being a professional with over 50 years experience dont know this and I, with half the experience do.

Hi Scotty. I am from the middle east. From Lebanon. I have an old Oldsmobile 88 year 1992. I sure have a major electric failure in it. If i leave battery wired it will drain overnight even when car is off. Now i lose the negative wire when im not using it. But when i turn it on the lights inside the cabine are brighter than the sun And after few minutes the negative pole of the battery is hot as the sun as well. I KNOW it wld be easy for u to figure it out. But after 300 of fail repairs with many electricians i still believe it is an easy fix. just have incompetant ppl who worked on it. One more thing. Now the car is barely running to 3mph and im sure it is not the transmission. i love this old beast. my oldsmobile I also own a Pontiac Bonneville. but thats another story

Chrysler Pacificas were good for no starter crank. Test the power at the starter and was good must be a bad starter. Install new starter still no crank. Theres a ground wire on the side if the transmission that rots off and kills the engine ground. Had an 03 Malibu that I bought with a bad motor. Put the new motor in and every once in a while it would pick up a super aggressive shift, then it would go away and be fine then come back, finally one day I was driving and it started acting up and the temperature gauge was dropping out. Found out I routed the harness wrong under the alternator and had rubbed through on the temp sensor causing the aggressive shift.

Hi Scotty. I have a BMW Z3 3. 0 litre. Its had all panels removed and replaced with fibreglass to look like a Maserati from the 60s. So the electrics have been messed with. Recently I thought I had a bad battery. I recharged it, did a load test and battery proved to be alright. Sometimes it would drain overnight. Did a leak to earth test. no problem. It went on like this working fine for weeks, then sometimes the battery was completely drained. I stopped at the shops one day and coming back, noticed one of the headlights was on. Ignition was not on or the headlight switch. weird as you say. Intermitant faults are such a pain I guess I will be checking the earths now

Thank you Scotty for making this video My 1989 Honda Prelude Si 2. 0 started acting weird this week. When I drive around everything is fine, but the moment I turn on the headlights and fog lights, the check engine light turns on but only when accelerating. Sometimes it only lights up when I press the clutch in. Sometimes it lights up with the brake being pressed. I now think I have an electrical problem since it has been raining here in Los Angeles and before the rain it was not doing that. I will continue with checking all my grounding wires and my relays and fuses. Thank you: D

An old car gets corrosion, inavidably. 90% or more of drivers wont go to that problem, clean this and that, but if you are in this 10% and you do you will save money not only for parts, towing and quick repair request are a lot more. My fuel pump was exactly as Scotty said, corrosion in relay. An old mechanic disconnected the relay and bent a wire, no isolotion at ends, plugged it in and everything worked. He even told me it can drive like that just when the engine is turned off unplug it or the pump will die. Just new relay, cheap and go.

My 1st car when I was a kid was a 1952 used Pontiac. It had many problems but the one we couldnt fix was: If you let the car sit for a couple of days it would drain the battery. The local garage couldnt find the problem. My dad took it to a electronic specialist some place in NYC. After a week he couldnt find the problem and told my dad to get it out of the shop. I sold the car when I went in the army back in 1961. Yes Im and old man now. Between that car and a new 1972 Jeepster Commander, I dont know which was worse. Id say the Jeep.

Many years ago when I was working at a 2 way radio shop, we got a police car in for an estimate. The interior had caught fire, and was put out with a chemical fire extinguisher. The police officer that was installing equipment on their cars had used a single screw to ground EVERYTHING He put it between the seats on the transmission hump. He also didnt cut away any carpet. The car functioned until the first HOT pursuit. With the radios transmitting, the light bar on, the siren wailing away, it gave new meaning to HOT pursuit

Great Video Scotty thanks for all the hard work. here is another tip. NEVER EVER spray clean your engine compartment always do it by hand if you must clean it. spray cleaning is ok (still would not recommend) for older pre-ECU cars but is murder for anything modern. the water will get into all the wires sensors and electronics and cause corrosion everywhere. you may as well take you car and light it on fire
