This Dodge Durango Has a Serious Problem Mike Marshall: I find it funny how you constantly bash Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep products all the time. I currently own 3 Jeep products (2008 Commander, 2015 Patriot, 2019 Cherokee), a 2014 Dodge Charger, a 1985 Ford Mustang and a 2009 Pontiac G6. I just recently traded in my wifes 2015 Ford Explorer for one of the Jeeps we have. I even owned a Toyota once but that was a long time ago. Needless to say I currently drive and have driven cars from many manufacturers. The best car Ive ever owned as far as least problems is the 2008 Jeep Commander which currently has almost 110, 000 miles on it. I can count on one hand the problems Ive had with that car and all of them were covered by warranty. Outside of routine maintenance, Ive hardly had to do anything to that vehicle. And surprise, surprise, its a Chrysler product. The car I had the most trouble with that Ive owned recently is the 2015 Ford Explorer. In the first year it needed an alternator and a throttle body replaced. The second alternator started making weird noises again but it was a lease and the car continued to run so I just lived with it. Those two problems which both happened in the first couple months of owning the car and had the car down for about 3 days each time led me to go back to Jeep when the lease was up. To tell you the truth, even with the Explorer, I dont have many issues with any of the cars. I maintain them according to schedule, I change the oil regularly and use quality fuel in them. If you do those things, any car can be a good car. Problem is most people treat their cars like crap and still expect them to run forever. I imagine a lot of your customer fall in this category and maybe a high percentage of them own Chrysler products which leads to your opinions. Either way, Ive owned many Chrysler/Ford/GM products and dont really see that big of a difference between them. People who claim otherwise are fanboys or just dont take care of their stuff in my opinion.

Similar thing happened with my 1999 Toyota 4runner yesterday. Had to get it towed because it kept dying in traffic. Battery light would come on and the engine would surge, backfire, and struggle to make any power. Replaced the battery, car ran fine for a little bit, until I noticed the lights kept getting dimmer and dimmer, and the wiper blades were slowing down. Next thing I know, that scary battery light is on again, the engine struggles again, and it just barely made it into the gas station going 3mph across the road. Luckily there werent any cars for a good distance, because there could have been a bad wreck if cars were coming up the road. My theory is that the alternator is bad, and isnt charging the battery like it should, which would explain why the new battery lasted for half the day and then slowly lost power from all the electronics that were being powered and how many times I started it throughout the day. I assume why the engine was affected was that once the battery dropped below 12 volts, the alternator must have kicked in trying to charge a dead battery, and if thats the case, the alternator had to be giving all it had, which must have put a very heavy load on the accessory system, therefore overloading the engine. Thats my theory. But Im just a shade tree mechanic, I aint too smart when it comes to all them trouble codes and electronic failures and whatnot. Should find out sometime next week from the shop. I mean, what do you expect? The engine has 284k miles, and it has the original alternator.

Or. Just Google Dodge Durango stalls out at speed and what pops up. Faulty alternator recall. Dont get me wrong Chrysler has some faults but in my experience there easy fixes. Ive had a few ram trucks and ALL of them had the same problems. When buying them at a nice LOW price I would put a new dash topper in it, replace the wires in the door jam grommets with high quality silicone ones, replace the plastic switch bezels for the power windows, install a big trans cooler and depending on the millage do the ball joints. All in it would cost around 500 bucks and a Saturday. Most were 3/4 ton and up and would provide 300k or more in reliable service life. I think the reason they got such a bad rep was because regular every day people would experience things like a huge hole in the dash or the switch bezel fall out exposing the wires and go the trucks falling apart And the dome light/speaker stop working because the wires in the door would fail. Then its. the truck has major electrical problems. I know companies like Toyotas do better with quality control so you dont experience problems like this. If only they made a truck that could do heavy duty work and have a price thats worth it. Now finally the domestic companies have caught on to not just capability but also quality.

I have a 2011 Dodge Durango Crew AWD 6 cyn and it did this, was driving and it did the chime thing and showed all the symbols that come on just like it had been started, freaked me out a little cause I wast sure at that moment if it was still running or not. it was. I have had like 4 recalls on it. one was for replacing the visors due to wiring to the mirror lights. one to cap off the brake booster hole to prevent water getting in and freezing in winter. one for the something on the fuel pump that could just shut off at any time, they added it to under the hood. think is a relay switch. and they replace the alternator. due to the diodes in the old one might give out at any time not heavy duty enough for all the pull. so they replace with a new one. It uses a motor that runs the HD for power steering instead of using the engine itself. The Battery is under the passenger seat in a well. Is expensive GEL type. Engine light came on, thought was maybe gas cap not on good, it did this before. so checked codesgot a P0101 and a P0128 now.

You are absolutely right. As a matter of fact and by coincidence my son asked me the day before yesterday if I could accompany him to San Antonio Texas to check out a 2012 Dodge Durango citadel that was for sale at a Toyota dealership. When we arrived at the dealership they informed us that the vehicle was at the dodge dealer for a recall 30 minutes later they informed us that the recall was for the air bags and that there was no resolution to the problem and that they couldnt sell it to the public like that, it had to go to auction. Since we traveled 160 miles and to not have it be a waste of time we searched the internet and found three others. They were R/Ts with the 5. 7 hemi. To make a long story short all three were giant POSs. The main problems were with engine control issues. Mostly with the (multiple displacement system) which cuts the engine From 8 to 4 cylinders for fuel economy.

My pickup truck has problems too it has faults not communicating to different components like my power steering until the transmission reaches a certain temperature, I have no power steering requiring me to use extra force I took it to a dodge dealer and they couldnt help me simply because it didnt have recall S19 but when I looked under my vehicle I noticed the rack was changed so my best explanation to my problem is that my ECM is acting retarded what can happen at random times is that itll give me a different temperature that is not accurate. Im sending it next week to get the studs on the exhaust manifold replaced and Ill tell them if they can do tests with my ECM because thats ridiculous how on a hot day the steering could be limited leaving me to use extra force.

As an FCA tech I can confirm theres about 10 different ECM flashes that need to be done if they still havent gotten that alternator recall done, that thing has been out since 2015. There should be another recall that released shortly after in there for the fuel pump relay as well. We all love being FCA techs. Not because theyre particularly nice to work on (the standard labor times compensate for that) but because theres LUDICROUS job security and even in the dead of winter in a small town, with over 20 techs were booked out for weeks. Most of which this winter has been these new JL Wranglers grenading pistons on customer test drives. Not a single tech here owns a Dodge either without a bumper to bumper extended warranty which I think speaks volumes

I owned a 2012 Durango R/T. This thing would run and drive fine most of the time, however once in awhile it wouldnt recognize the key fob and wouldnt start up. I took it to the dealer they wanted to replace the alternator which I thought was crazy. I did my own research and turned out it had a faulty pcm. The dealer actually took my advice and replaced the PCM thankfully it was still under warranty. All has been great since. I just found it funny because I asked them to check the PCM and they told me it wasnt that. After going back a 2nd time going there they replaced it for me. I wouldnt have went back if it wasnt under warranty but when I called Chrysler they told me to go back to the dealer to have it replaced there.

Those Mercedes designed Dodge Durangos are awesome. Im looking for an SRT to put in my garage for future resale when theyre worth 3 times more then they cost new. To say these are bad vehicles because the alternator was bad is ridicules. FCA doesnt make alternators they have a supplier that makes them, probably the same supplier that made the alternator on your 94 Toyota Celica, I wonder how many times its been replaced. Looks like the dealer did the right thing and replaced the alternator as they should. Thats more than I can say for Toyota they would say its my fault the alternator went bad like they did many time with the LAST Toyota I had, what a POS that was. Happy motoring.

Hi Scotty I own a 2009 CLS 550 it was made in Germany runs great lots of power. Now I have this service B thing come on at 200, 000 Kms how can I get rid of it? Ive tried to look on the internet & no one seems to no what its for me being a pretty good back yard mechanic, I think it has to do with probably changing the transmission oil rear diff oil maybe brake fluid power steering fluid ETC. then when thats all done how can I get rid of the Message without going to the Benz dealership to get it done cause in Canada they charge 140. 00 per hr to work on ur car if you have some information on how to do this it would be Muchly appreciated. Thx Richard M.
