Traded my 1971 Beetle (Nearly bullet proof) for a new 1975 rabbit With AC. Within 50 miles the rubber timing belt was destroyed as a bolt holding the ac compressor worked out and it was inside the timing belt cover. Non interference engine so they put a new timing belt in. Driving in Arizona going through Texas Canyon with the new timing belt the other bolt worked out and came through the hood like a bullet. Was able to limp into Yuma where I was working and took it to the VW dealer, it took 3 months to get the parts as it destroyed the pulleys and the belt. After that it kept destroying water pump belts witch I learned to keep spares when that happened. I had a 3 year loan on it and the payments were 300 per month. It started burning oil (one quart per fill up) Still in warranty and they told me it was a bad head design and for 300 they had a head replacement policy. What a piece of crap, I refused it, My wife was driving the car and was hit by a Ford Pinto and it was totaled and insurance paid just enough to pay off what was left on the loan. Last VW I will ever have anything to do with.

Stop looking so u never find the worst vehicle again.
I had a 2011 vw tdi jetta, that thing was absolutely amazing. I drove it 7 years before vw bought it bavk for roughly 5 k over what itd sell for on a dealer lot.
Point is that little car was absolutely amazing.
Looked n drove exactly the same as it did when new. It was simply amazing.
Its not the lifetime of the engine, its the lifetime of that specific part lol.
Scotty u need to get out of ur head that are not any people (besides truck drivers, hot shotters in 25-4500's, n maybe taxi drivers, small companies that buy a vehicles for roving security, even they prob wont keep em that long, n the like) that want 300k out of a vehicle.
Now people in salt ridden states like pa, would never want a vehicle that long, unless its their weekend summer car n even then itd be impossible to out those miles on it.

well, vw's in europe are a lot better quality from what I experienced so far. Also isn't it the chain thats more complicated to change not the belt? in UK you usually won't pay more than 300GBP to change timing belt but the chain costs 500 and more. Chain is pretty much inside the engine, unlike the belt. Looks like mechanics are ripping ppl off in USA just because it's a newer car. Btw I'm driving vw golf mk6 1. 4 tsi, which still has a chain(bough it used. I heard about the chain tensioner failures so I did change the whole thing for a updated model at about 60k miles. So far 73k in total and it's ok.

This Jetta is about the most boring car I have ever seen, inside and out.
And if the Jetta has a bad engine, research BMW engines a few years back. They are crap, both the diesels and the gasoline one's. I am so shocked at what I am reading. The owners have nothing but throuble, and that is from early on and quite low mileage. And their DPF is crap too. And they are full of rust just after a few years. What has been going on in the auto industry for the last couple of decades?

I actually own a Jetta 2011 with 1. 4 TSI engine and 7 DSG DCT.
Scotty is quite accurate it s nice and zippy. It s drives amazing for the money, hell my old Jetta drives better then lots of new compact economy cars. But a big problem with VW is repair and maintenance bills, they are expensive! Simply opening the transformation to change the fluid can cost about a grand and if you need to change the clutches.
Well you take the good with the bad. Just be aware of it.

I have the 2019 car on lease for 98 a month and it has been great so far especially the gas mileage about avg 53 mpg, it s has actually the ASISIN 8 speed not the dsg transmission, and this is now built on the same MQB platform as the golf so I believe that they trying to fix things especially when comes to longevity compared to their history of making cars, even though it is an interference engine.

Mr. Kilmer was highly complimentary while concluding it is the worst ever made because it has a timing belt like many vehicles over the last few decades, including those made by Toyota. I can replace a timing belt so I would be more concerned about the longevity of the small 1. 4 liter turbocharged engine or the crazy tech, like adaptive cruise control, breaking.

1. 4L Turbo DI engine that puts out. 147 HP? What? My '09 Civic has a 1. 8L NA that puts out 140 HP. That turbo is doing almost nothing for all the unreliability it brings. Imagine a 28k small car where your engine doesn't even put out 150 hp in 2020.
Also noticed Scotty forgot to put the license plate cover on it.

Vw started making those 1. 4 tsi some 15 years ago. The timing chain and piston rings were made out jelly now they made timing belt that they used 35 and 25 years ago. Timing belts were solid. They are starting runnig its tail like french auto makers. Do so much to impove and even more to go back to good design.
