Scotty, I really like your videos, however I disagree that a dirty air filter can effect air/fuel ratio. The MAF sensor and the O2 sensor(s) are used by the ECU to calculate air/fuel ratio. The MAF sensor is after the air filter so a dirty /clogged air filter does restrict total air flow which is compensated for by the ECU adjusting fuel trim to maintain air/fuel ratio under all driving conditions. I totally agree that a clean air filter helps maintain the engines peak performance. Also very important is when you replace the air filter is to make sure you have no air leaks between the air filter and the throttle body. An air leak after the MAF will cause air flow to be under reported by the MAF. Vacuum leaks will cause the MAF to under report, as well. There are a lot of really great points you mentioned and I especially like you mentioning to not use garbage replacement parts on your car. A repair using garbage parts almost always cost more in the long run than using OEM quality parts the first time.

Scotty, I have been beating myself up over which computer diagnostic scanner to purchase. Both a name brand and model recommendation from you would be greatly appreciated. Were not really concerned about price within reason as long as you can hopefully come up with name brand other than the tool truck brands. Theres a crap load of scanners out there with every name you can think of. I own a 2008 Volvo S40, two 1997 trucks, one is an F350 and the other is an F250. Lastly I also own a 2012 F150 FX4 super cab short bed with the 3. 5 liter ecoboost engine with pretty much all the goodies of that model truck. Includes the power roof, power-heated/cooled seats for both sides. Rain sensor wipers etc. you get the idea. Im sure theres others out there with the same questions so Im sure in the event you can help me out, youd be helping others out as well. Quick question, do automotive scanners also work on newer motorcycles? Thank you for your Service Former Marine

Hi Scotty, all the information you provide is Great and easy to follow for all drivers. I am as old or older than you are and my vehicles regardless of brand have all lasted my well over 200, 000 miles before any engine or transmission problems developed. My 1982 Dodge 318ci 2 wheel drive Ramcharger has 498, 000 miles and still has original engine and trans running strong after towing my 2, 000 pound boat 25 times 1, 350 miles each way to the Fl Keys. My wifes 93 T-Bird 5. 0 has 200, 000+ miles and engine runs great. Unfortunately even with a few trans. fluid and filter changes the Ford AOD trans is on it last legs and I will pull it and rebuild it myself soon since while 1, 2, 3 and reverse are ok the OD band is shot. If is far, far, far less costly to maintain them well than pay for repairs or new replacement vehicles. As usual it is always about the Nut behind the wheel (The steering wheel).

Nice video, but not all the engines are the same, you have petrol engines and Diesel engines leave the electric and hybrid aside, you have small capacity engines and big block capacity engines, petrol engines are lightweight responsive power but not to torque, life span is shorter for 4 cylinders and under, 5-6-8 etc will last longer, but the Diesel engines are stronger and can take much more bite as they are made of still, and are very torquey, a 6 cylinder Diesel engine properly maintained will last you more then 500, 000 miles, thats why Ive got a 6 cylinder 3 litre bmw Diesel engine, one more thing cars made for American market are not as good as cars made for European market, Mercedes bmw vw etc cheat on American models, less power more reliability problems to ripoff you guys as they think youre guys are rich and can afford the costs.

Ok. dirty air filter. If the filter today becomes dirty the mass air flow picks up the reduction in air flowing in and reduces the fuel injected into the engine to maintain the optimal air/fuel ratio. Exception to this is carburated engines and speed density contoled engines. Furthermore, if you over service the air filter you are actualy doing more harm as the more dirty an air filter becomes, the more efficient it becomes at filtering the air. This may sound contridicting but Cummins engine Corp. did a great study on this with proof to back claim. Pretty much any mass air flow sensored engine; a dirty air filter will not cause harm. Fuel economy will not worsen and do not replace the air filter unless a fault code is triggered or reduction in performance is felt. I have 70k on mine right now with a car having 250k on the original motor.

You are wrong about the dirty air filter using more fuel. Your theory is flawed. To a point, your fuel use theory is correct for carburettor engines. The engine MAF sensor measures the amount of air coming into the engine after the air filter. The CPU will only allow the right amount of fuel for the amount of air that has entered the engines intake. It will never be a rich or lean mixture assuming all else is in good order. Actually, you yourself mention this latter on in your video. The dirty filter engine will need more throttle to allow more air in order to produce the power needed. Point taken though, an engine is most efficient with a good intake of clean air, therefore, lasting longer. Start-stop, when the engine is thoroughly warm is not really a problem. most wear taking place is yes when an engine is started from cold.

I regularly check my air filter under a bright light bulb, then I blow it clean with compressed air, I got almost 200, 000 miles out of an air filter, I also added some loose a/c filter under neath as a prefilter. That stuff have very low resistance to air flow. I also do not like the start/stop system, but they do not wear the engine as much as you claimed, it is from cold start that the wear take place, the stop/start system usually works on an already warm and lubricated engine. But that HD starter and the motorcycle size battery, and controls will cost more in maintenance than any gas savings. That is whaaat happen when US congress mindlessly press for better gas mileage, auto makers will try and attain the better mileage, at any price.

The most annoying things on modern cars are the stop/start thingy, electric windows that wont wind when the ignition is not on, and the seat belt warning noise (I have a long driveway, with a gate at the end, also, GPSs that give you bad directions, and use annoying, nagging computer voices (buy a map. These are the most annoying, but having to replace whole assemblies to replace a small 10 part is infuriating. I dont know what labor costs in the US are, but here in Australia its 100-150 an hour, of which, the mechanic gets 28. So sometimes, even if the part is cheap, the labor costs make it so its cheaper to replace the whole assembly. Its an upside down and back to front world we live in. Thanks Scotty.

I was given a 1992 Geo Metro XFi to get around just needed the head gasket replaced my friend told me. After I drove the car 400 miles I found the brakes, axle shafts, suspension and steering parts all need replaced. There was a fuel line leak. I fixed that. But then I found another leak. I cant fix it. I need a good fuel filler hose for the car. The one connected to the filler end leaks at the gas tank. If you know a place that can make a replica of the original part I would like to get one ordered. Or is there someone who is collecting parts from Geos and SuzukisLet me know
