My sister had a Vega, all she could afford back then. It was a piece of junk when she got it. Her problem was if it got below 30 degrees, it was the hardest thing to start in the morning. She would sit out there cranking, pumping the gas peda and usually she could easily smoke two cigarettes before it would start or even think of starting. the first winter she had it, before she figured it out, she would flood it so bad. We always kept a fresh set of spark plugs in the car with the tools to change them. After a few times of this happening she found that before even trying to crank it she would pump that gas pedal several times, usually this would get it to atleast fire a few times. Pumping it while cranking it never did seem to work, but pumping it before turning the key seemed to be the best thing. She drove that car for 3 years before it finally died.

Living in the rust belt in 1986 I had a 74 Nova with the straight 6. By the time I became the cars caretaker there was more rust than steel. The rust was in every door, the trunk, and worst of all the corroborator mounting studs. One or maybe two of them broke off, so it sucked air and ran ridiculously lean. Being a broke student and not having a set of easy outs, I found a different solution. I bought a kit that converted automatic chokes into manuals. I drove with a hand on the wheel, a foot on the gas, and the other hand on the choke cable continuously adjusting the mixture as I drove. I got pretty good at it too. I was just lucky it had an automatic transmission: I dont think I could have controlled the gas, clutch, shifter, wheel, and choke all at once.

My late dad once owned a Chevy Vega. I remember the excessively top-heavy engine vibrated so loudly you couldnt hear the AM radio even at max volume. It rusted so badly you could see the road underneath you through holes in the floorboard that were so big that if you ran over somebody at least you could see if it was someone you knew. It also burned more oil than gas, and Im completely convinced that the Chevy Vega was singlehandedly responsible for the formation of OPEC. Nevertheless, I will never forget the fun times I had in that car with my dad, driving to work with him during the week helping him at his construction jobs, and going fishing with him on weekends. As a kid, I thought it was the best car in the world.

The worst car I ever bought was a Renault Alliance. It drove just 30 miles from the dealership and they had to send a wrecker to pick it up. 4 days later they said it was done. 72 miles later it quit completely. 1 week later it conked out again. Again, they tried to repair it; I finally got tired after the 5th time and invoked the Lemon Law. I brought the car back to the dealer and signed the papers over to them and bought a new Olds Cutlass. Before leaving the Showroom, there was a huge commotion in the parking lot. Fire trucks showed up. The Renault, sitting quietly, unattended, not running and parked for 20 minutes decided to burst into flames for no reason.

I had the pleasure of driving an old used Chevy Vega in Alaska one summer. Thing was a POS burning oil smoking like a chimney. But the biggest POS was brand spanking new Plymouth Horizon my girlfriend had. The AC gave out after about a week. The dealership couldnt keep the AC going more than 50 miles. The interior literally falling apart from the get go. Anemic engine with a transmission that constantly hunted around for a gear. This was one of the many cars that Detroit built that was a gift to Japanese auto industry to help them get established. Right along with the Ford Pinto burning down the house.

I had a 1975 prototype with V8, I bought it new, sold it 15 years ago, the car was in factory new cond, garages, never saw winter salted roads, the money bought me a very very great condition GMC motor home, 1978 front wheel drive, was always in a metal building meticulously cared for, 17, 000 miles, all new tires, brakes, extremely clean, its going to be traded even for a new Air Stream 19 Flying Cloud, awnings both sides, the fellow trading likes Toys, and to think it all started with my vega, Off I go for my last GMC camping trip in The White Mountains n. h. I enjoyed your video,

Vegas sure looked good, but unless you retrofitted a 350 with auto in one the factory 4s sure didnt last. The Gremlins with the 258 six were a much better car. The V8 ones required some tinkering. The Pintos were good except for the rubber band timing belt and the transmission when they aged. - But, the worst car I ever owned? A 1981 Ford Escort wagon that blew head gaskets twice on two motors before the car hit 80, 000 miles. These first edition Ford Escorts seemed like a disposable car that you drive for less than 70, 000 miles, then dump the car before the head gasket issues start.

SCOTTY, I try to catch you when you go live but youre a real popular guy. I had a question to ask you, and Im hoping I can get through this way. Im in the market for a used car, and ive settled on two that Im really serious about. One is a 99 Buick regal with the supercharged engine 3800 series with 117k miles. The other is a Chrysler Concorde LXI 2004 with 129k. Now I know a car guru and top shelf mechanic of your caliber would point me in the right direction and interested in your take of these two cars. I want something that will last for a while. Thanks Scotty

The absolute worst car I ever owned? Hmm, 1977 Vega. Or was it the 67 Beetle? Got to go with the 77 Vega. I bought it five years old and it didnt last another year before it literally fell apart. Bavarian winters werent too kind to it. The 67 Beetle had also seen a few winters, Michigan winters, and the rust cancer was pervasive enough that I could look straight down and count the pot holes as I drove over them. However, though it was a rust bucket from hell, I put no additional money in it, and sold it for what I paid.
