Our 2002 Ford Explorer E. B. got to 325, 000+ miles before the transmission started slipping and ultimately failed.
The 2002-04 Explorers are _notorious_ for having transmission issues, so if you have one or plan to get one, change the trans fluid every 75K miles or so, and don't pay attention to Ford's Lifetime Fluid claim. To change the trans fluid, you have to do it from the bottom by first draining the old fluid, then using a special tool to shoot the new fluid into the system through the bottom drain plug opening (yes, it's a ridiculous procedure.
That being said, it was/is a great truck, ran super solid with zero engine issues, the transmission is actually quite good (if you change the fluid, and I still have it (will replace the transmission when I have time.
The only consistent weak spots I've found on it are that it eats water pumps (replaced 3x) and wheel bearings, and the rear diff's roaring noise as the mileage gets higher. All fixable/replaceable though.
Overall, solid truck. (I would only go with the V8, by the way, avoid the V6 versions)

I have 2005 Ford Explorer, it was my son s. He moved on. I have kept it as a beater vehicle for the last 4 years but we have it in the family for the last 7 years. We put 70, 000 on top of the 70, 000 that was on it. I like it but the hubs are always going bad on this vehicle. Front axle, hubs again, alternator. It s no Toyota but it s not bad as a local ride. Great in the snow! 140, 000 miles. Not bad! Oh I bought it in Vermont, it is rusting bad. Maybe another year out of it before it goes!

Can anyone help? So we put my battery in backwards my car & tried jumping it and It soarked really bad & now It won't start. We tried testing the battery & It's fine and we tried one fuse but It didn't fix it. The headlights don't work but If I put hazards on they do, and the lights work when the door is open, and the car still dings when the key is put in the ignition. Any ideas on what it is that needs fixed?

My mom has been driver her (used) 2006 Ford Explorer for the last 15 years. Has about 260, 000 on it, and all she has done to it is replace the normal wear and tear, struts, ac compressor, window motor and switch, and 2-3 other smaller fixes. It s been paid off for 3 years and she has put around a total of 2000 in fixes in it since she s bought it. 2000 in 15 years. Not too bad I d say.

Couldn't tell if that one also has the obligatory crack around the logo on the rear window hatch.
My sister's 2003 Explorer just reached 200, 000 miles & 300 miles after that the engine finally quit. It carries on now with a used engine.
Ford can make better cars if they felt like it. Hate all the plastic crap.

Hi Scotty, love your vids!
Got a question for you: I have an Acura rdx turbo awd, run excellent, however, once a month or so, it's hard to start. Other than that no other issues whatsoever. Oh, and it had a new battery put in 9 months ago, and only has 120, 000 miles on it.
Any ideas? Thanks!

I still know people who still the early mid 2000s Explorers. A lot of them have (over) 200, 000 miles. Aside from the first 1-2 model years of transmission defects that generation was actually pretty solid. The first gen Chevy Trailblazers from the same era were pretty decent too.

I had this exact same car until the transmission went out and i sold it for 1000. I still miss until this day! The engine is powerful. However, the 5R55S transmission is a piece of junk. The cheapest it was gonna cost me to rebuild it was 1700. My car had only 158k miles.
