Hey Scotty, again, great timing My 2011 Lexus IS F is about to hit 60K miles. The dealer and an independent Lexus service specialist both told me its a sealed unit with lifetime fluid. I plan to drop the pan, change the filter, clean the pan and put back 3. 5 qts of TOYOTA WS fluid. I was thinking about using Red Line D6 synthetic fluid but was concerned mixing the fluids might cause problems. Many in my F forums say it wont cause an issue. I would rather be safe than sorry. I plan after completing the filter and fluid swap to go 1K miles and pull the pan plug and drain and refill and do this two more times. And you are correct The method to have the trans temp sensor set on the dash is like an old Nintendo video game secret code. up, up, down, left, left, right, up, right, down with the shifter. I plan to just buy an infrared temp sensor and read the temp of the pan and then drain. just crazy compared to the trans fluid changes of the past. Thanks again for posting all your help

A lot of people with jeep cherokees with the aw4 automatic don't know that the transmission is an asin warner transmission or toyota transmission. Chrysler recommends +4 atf for their transmissions but the aw4 is not a Chrysler transmission it needs a dexron fluid there is even a Chrysler service bulletin that says its ok to use the +4 in the jeep cherokees and of course that was when they were all out of warranty. My experience is that freshly rebuilt or low mileage transmissions work fine with the +4 and its a fine fluid but you put it in a high mileage transmission and their is problems because its a more slippery fluid and every auto parts store recommends that you put the +4 atf in these transmissions i have done many many repairs because of this. I dont understand why they would recommend +4 in these transmissions especially because when that service bulletin came out every vehicle with that transmission was out of warranty and most likely had high miles.

A single ATF drain&fill only replaces 35-65% of the old ATF, so you have to repeat it 3-5 times to get a >90% ATF change. Or you can do a pseudo flush by draining the ATF cooler return line while adding new ATF to the pan until it runs clean. Both methods replace >90% of the ATF so you can make it 50k miles between ATF service. But doing a single drain&fill every 100k miles will not keep the ATF strong enough to avoid problems indefinitely because you are using up and wearing out the ATF faster than you are replenishing it with partial fluid changes. High end aftermarket ATFs like Redline, Amsoil, even Valvoline MaxLife work as well as, or even better than OEM ATFs, and are far less expensive than the car mfg's own-branded ATF. Don't believe all the hype and threats about ATF. Just make sure whatever aftermarket brand you use that it's type of ATF that is compatible with your car.

Hi ScottyI have a oldy VW T4 from 1990 with 382000 Km on the clock, it has a 2. 4 diesel with a 5 gear manual transmission box. I don't know what the old owner did, but I think that he never changed the transmission oil and I'm planning to change it. Sometimes when I'm driving, if I don't put the 5th and old until I release the clutch, it jumps out and the motor revs up. do you think the problem comes from the old oil? I will change the connection balls between the box and the shift lever too anyway. Thanks for your help on your videos, I learned already a lot with you Keep up the good work; )

An observation. Being an old timer, I changed the Toyota fluid and filter on my 2004 Avalon at 40, 000 miles. It then ran better. At the 90, 000 general overhaul, I also changed the Toyota fluid and filter. Again, it ran better. Then when I took it in at 105, 000 miles I had it checked. I was doing short hops in town for 15, 000 miles. The fluid was dirty So, I changed the Toyota fluid and filter again. Never flushing. Once you get over 100k, the manufacturer really doesn't address maintenance. At 105, 000, I also replace the original, in line, fuel filter. The manual is silent. It was starting to go.

Scotty is wrong. They took the dipstick because its easier to get them to get you to have them service it instead of allowing you to do it yourself. Its all about making money at the Service counter. Wrong fluids don't happen if people read the owners manuals. Even the new owners manuals still give the fluid type. And you still can check and fill a modern transmission its just more of a pain and requires being under the vehicle. Most of the servicing is similar to how you serviced a Manual transmission back in the day.

I ALMOST did that once. I was about to put gear oil in my '08 Mustang's manual transmission because in the past, the manual transmissions my family owned all used gear oil. Before I put it in, I checked the owner's manual. It said to use Mercon V automatic transmission fluid. Well I have to admit I questioned my sanity putting ATF in a manual transmission. But that's what the owners manual said, so I put Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in it, and it worked wonderful.

Listen to Scotty on this one I just had a shop use an ATF claiming compatibility with the OEM fluid in my Chevy Silverado. I had immediate issues with the torque converter. The shop tried to fix by flushing again and again with the compatible fluid. I demanded they put in OEM fluid, and voila - the torque converter shudder went away. Unfortunately, I have no idea how much damage was done by running the other fluid.

Many people now can look back on how we treated the whales and see what a tragedy that was. By today's societal standards it can even be seen as insane, just like human slavery and forced religious conversion. Maybe one day we'll look back and say the same about all animals. I'm not talking as much about occasional eating of a cow steak or whatever, but the abominable state of the factory farming industry in general.
