we'll be travelling across northern Austria, from west to east in a very rare 6 axle electric locomotive from 1960, known as the BB class 1110. We start in Bludenz, an alpine town located at the meeting point of 5 valleys in the Vorarlberg which, borders with Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany. For the first part of our journey we'll take the Arlberg railway to Innsbruck, the second highest standard gauge railway in Austria, after the Brenner. Completed in 1884 with gradients of up to 3. 1%, it proved to be very challenging to operate. Not only were there traction difficulties; avalanches, rockfalls, landslides and floods all posed serious challenges. Over the years, avalanche galleries, tunnels and diversions have been built to overcome some of these dangers. These have all been labelled with their respective year of completion during the video. Former routes are also shown. The numbers that appear at the top right indicate the highest gradient in the section between two stations in permille (a tenth of a percent. More tunnels are in planning for the Arlberg railway, so we have to enjoy the views while we can! We then take the lower Inn valley railway to Wrgl, which serves as the north - south connection from Germany to Italy via the Brenner railway. From Wrgl, we'll take the Salzburg - Tyrol railway to Salzburg, also known as the Giselabahn, named after the Archduchess Gisela of Austria, the second daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I. With its tight curves and gradients of up to 2. 6%, it's not suited for express trains, which predominantly take the shortcut through Germany via Rosenheim. From Salzburg we'll take the old Westbahn line towards Vienna, which we have partly seen in the opposite direction in a previous video (Vienna - Passau: The speeds displayed indicate the highest allowable speed until a new speed is displayed. Watched this in episodes some weeks ago, good to see that, on the high ground at least, the railway is still regarded as part of the environment, rather than something to box in and conceal - also good to see how the new route through St Anton compares with my memories of the previous formation - the relatively new Pyhrn connection was fun too - thanks for your marathon efforts on this! \m/

I did watch the entire video, but I had to do it over 2 days, 3hrs day 1 and 6hrs today. What a great weather day for such a cross country trip and such beautiful scenery. That last hour of the trip must have felt like a full day as it went so slow. Love the videos.

Watching this is so cathartic. I put on some good music, turn off the lights, and just zone out watching. I wonder what the psychological reason is for the cathartic effect?

I'm 3/4 of the way through and enjoying it a lot but on a practical note. how inefficient is this trip. surely they could have found something to take back instead of running light?

Amazing video. Took me multiple days to complete watching it. Thank you again for filming and publishing things like this! Looking for more beautiful videos from you.

From the map, it looks like Absdorf wasn't the last time you changed direction.
The way to Ernstbrunn is So windy! Seems like it detours around every farm tractor.
