Welcome to this trip report bound to Antwerpen, the most beautiful station in the world. - TRIP INFORMATION - Railway company: SNCB Train type: AM75 From: Brussels to Antwerpen (Belgium) Duration: 46 min
Date: 2024-01-09

Comments and reviews: 35

WC = Water Closet, one of the earliest terms for an indoor bathroom, and I believe British in origin, but commonly used in Germany. The graffiti on a lot of European passenger trains is pretty disgusting. Reminds me of NY City subway cars in the 1970s. Now our freight cars in the U. S. look like that, but fortunately most passenger rail providers keep it off of their equipment and discourage taggers by cleaning it off as soon as possible if it happens. They developed paint that makes it easier to remove graffiti. When I was a freight conductor and engineer I always swore if I caught one of those vandals in the act I was going to take the air hose wrench to them.

I remember taking this line during a heatwave in 2015 July. Not a pleasant journey. Regarding power sockets, only the really new coaches being implemented on the Eupen - Ostende weekend trains have power outlets at every seat. I frequently travel between Liege and Tournai during weekends and the long journeys are really boring with my now old laptop who's battery doesn't last longer than an hour and a half.

NMBS (as most Belgians would call it) is overall good value for money. I have a car in Belgium but use NMBS trains as much as I can when I'm there. And whenever I go from Antwerp to Brussels I try to use the slowest trains because they tend to be the oldest. Though of course this year I haven't been able to come over as I'm happy to live in a virtually corona-free country.

Funny how ppl in here comment on how they think it's amazing. Yeah amazing to get charged 20+ euros for a one way trip to a shithole (Brussels, riding an antiquated POS with no room to sit down.
I dare you to take a ride in this thing again mid-summer. Nevermind the power outlet. You will complain about the lack of oxygen and the smell of everyone's ass.

Jeez I work at SNCB and didn't even know we still had one of those old burgundy paint scheme AM75 with the old seats around xD
This must be like one of the last surviving ones.
We have plenty of -Quadruples- in Charleroi but all have been refurbished quite some time ago (They're even ETCS compliant and all)

--There are a lot of modern trains in Belgium (Double decker Trains, TGV Thalis) and some old trains from 70 ies and 80 ies. The guy who filmed this video, try to convince us that all trains are like this. It is completely fake. There are old and modern trains like in other countries in Europe-.

Yeah ticket offices in France are getting pretty miserable, I believe that's one of the things SNCF has to cut costs for. They count on users to rather go for the machines or buy their tickets online. I was happy to find a desk open at Gare du Nord when my last-train-of-the-day got cancelled though

The line you couldn't find anything about is from the diablo project I believe.
Could also be the new line the are going to be using for the renewed Mechelen staion. Wich I believe it is since the video is from august 2019 and the diablo project was completed somewhere in 2012 I believe.

Those benches (3: 55, on one side they are too big for 2 passengers but too small for 3 passengers, and on the other side the bench is too large for 1 person, but too small for 2. So when it's crowded, 5 people can sit in a row being very uncomfortable, too close together.

I'm so suprised by your enthousiasm since I can hear complaints about the SNCB/NMBS every day here in Belgium. I'm quite sad to see the population fall in distrust for the company when they more than ever need help from the public opinion.
reply

OMG, this old thing is still running? 38 years ago, I travelled with this train every day to go to university, even then it was already some years old. They also used to have an odd smell, don't know if that is still the case today.
reply

I see evidence of refurbishment. Reupholstered and/or replaced seats and it looks like the interior has been worked on, but maybe not recently. In the U. S, though, that train would be considered state-of-the-art technology. :/

7: 07 You are on line 25 (Brussel-Noord to Antwerpen-Luchtbal. This line just next to line 25 and still under construction when you filmed is line 25N (Mechelen to Schaerbeek) and which goes through Brussels-Airport (Line 36c.

I hope I'll be seeing this scene again soon, without any worry about some virus being spread.
Visited Brussels by train a number of times when my brother lived there.
Good times.
Cheers from Norway.

Hello from Norway. Was in Belgium 1990-2018-2019. It's the same - everything is outdated, extremely poorly maintained and simply dirty almost everywhere. Some tourist areas are ok - otherwise completely ass.
reply

The first class thing is something you will find on every Belgian train, it's always empty, except for the train personell who all have free cards for the first class and chill there together
reply

I took this train hundreds of times, until about three years ago these were the standard trains on my line. Now you just see them once in a while. They-re fine as long as it isn-t summer.
reply

The tolerance of graffiti in Europe is spreading like a cancer, clearly been getting worse over the years with some of the others best networks suffering the worst from the stuff
reply

Damn! Are there still trains that dump the human poop on the rails? Hell, i wouldn't want to be a mechanic then, because that shit is sprayed all over the underside
reply

Nice to see 'Ox Alien' grafitti on the walls when entering Antwerp (didn't notice that last time I was there. then again, it was dark back then so. )
reply

Wonderful my ass when you walk in the street and garbage evreywhere Anderlecht and other places are shit traffic is horrible a'd beggers in evrey corner.
reply

Several years ago I got on a train from Rozendaal to Antwerpen and this was the rolling stock. I just couldn't believe what a blast from the past it was
reply

Yes these are old trains. They are loud and very very hot in summer. Most of these trains are dirty and old, but the seats are cool and comfy.
reply

nice video, but please learn to close those inner doors behind you. one of traveller's biggest frustrations. they're manual of course in this one.
reply

02: 39 I'm surprised to see they're still around. I definitely rode in several of these back when I was living in Belgium in the 80s. Wow!
reply

I hate this train sometimes when i takes the train to brussel i get into this one sometimes it's hot sometimes it's cold and it smells badd
reply

I did a commute from Brussels to Mechelen for a few months, and yeah it was alright but punctuality at rush hour is rarely achieved fair to say.
reply

i live in Aachen and i really love belgian train travel. good service, superb prices, always on time in comparison to the german Bundesbahn
reply

6: 11 WC is a funny word to you? It is the abbreviation of Water Closet and therefore English. Not so funny anymore I suppose.
reply

As an Italian, is a little consoling, known that there are other west European country, that operate regional train in a bad status -
reply

i remember i already took those trains in the 80's. they were painted in orange back then. Haha the inside hasn't much changed; )
reply

I took those trains everyday to school 22 years ago, it's like travelling back in time. Nice work. Greetings from Belgium
reply

- 5: 10 you've spotted Luckas Vander Taelen: a Belgian journalist, singer and former Member of the European Parliament.
reply

Lol, come to Hungary and visit the countryside: D
You gonna see trains like this every day: DDD Even worse ones.

reply

wow in Slovakia everyone criticizes the condition of the trains. I did not expect Belgium to have even worse trains.
