The early days of Flixtrain were like this - you can see this in the model train world - they didn't even have the bright green exterior with the black window band - they were makeshift looking collections of several different UIC cars. Not refurbished, no Wifi. the feeling was that of the mid 80s. Now they are all refurbished, have a nice wood-finish interior, all seats are (looking) new, WiFi and nice exterior. Maybe the SNCF didn't want to throw money away and is waiting for the services to be accepted and then will refurbish everything but I agree - you can't call a service -2nd class only- and then have some cars without AC and without power outlets. It's 2022. We all have devices we need to charge and if the trip is 4h instead of 2h, a lot of devices will drain to almost empty on the way. This is an absolute embarrassment. It would've been better of NO ONE had had a power outlet if you ask me instead of just SOME. Even if it had been an extra you'd have to pay for it would've been better. But this is just laughing in the customers' faces. It's disrespectful.

Interesting, but at the same time disappointing. They are creating a social fracture like this. Either you're rich and can afford to take the expensive TGV for a distance trip, or you're not rich and have to take a crappy old train that they didn't even bother cleaning up correctly for the inaugural service, with -sometimes airco- -sometimes power outlets-. Where's the middle-class here? A decent comfortable train for an average price?
Just for info, the same distance from Brussels to Lyon or to Munich (germany) costs like 100 euros more when using the french TGV compared to the german ICE, for us a family of 3 (5 year old kid, and that's one way only.
If not happy with the price, we have to take a train departing around 7: 30 am, with miserable seat pitch and no guarantee for airco during the summer? The system is disrespectful for the average humans.

Having a dedicated passenger railline with discounted prices here in the U. S would be the only way to get people out of their cars.
Sure we can get high speed rail in some places, but most railroad lines here share with freight cars, which have priority. I'm not sure that is why train travel is more expensive than plane travel or car travel across country, and I think it's alot better overall than car or plane. The cost and the time factor could be improved if ever cars would be less on overburdened highways.
Last year I took a train trip of a similar distance here in the western U. S, it took 2 trains and a bus to get to destination, cost $200 for coach seat (non-sleeper) without access to shower on 36-hour trip total. So yeah, some places have got the infrastructure in place already. Lucky dogs

there is something that makes me happy about this. That is that even if corail is already 50 y/o more or less the fact that they made a brand new service with those cars, that they are present in a lot of services around the country makes me think that they are making an effort to preserve them as long as possible (unlike other countries. Add also recent modifications like the renewing of the corail reversible units made in 2008. And some refurbishments as well. Taking all of this, hopfully they will be with us for quite a while more.
And don't get me wrong, modern trains like Regiolis Regio2n or Coradia Liner are not bad at all, but there is something about corail they can't replicate if you know what i mean.

-SimplyRailway Coming from Switzerland a country with only 10% the size of France and 10 times the funding for rail. France is better in all ways ok prices, friendly staff witch likes there jobs. I had to travel to a meeting in France and took the train. This trip changed my mind about what a good train is, it-s not a stadler flirt -bus- witch costs 30- for 50km and takes 1h 20min, it-s SNCF TER corail trains cheap, reliable and punctual. This is a very good train witch should be expanded to more routes. Btw. SNCF has a better on time performance than SBB if you leave out unattended Bags something SBB does not stop a train for.

I wish EU would authorize competition with Ouigo in conventional trains to get Flixtrain remodeled Corails, involving SNCF in a minimal way.
SNCF needs to hire more coach cleaners for all services in general, including TGV is sometimes dirty even in first.
Ouigo service needs power outlets and fast wifi, new LED Lighting too, the current yellow lighting looks horribly dated.
Also, a cafe and snack vending machins on TER and Ouigo would be good. It's too bad SNCF cut back Bar and Diners in the 90's.
At least offer something in 1st for TER. GREAT REVIEW as always!

nice video Thibaut but as has been mentioned Lyon and Nantes both already have cheap Ouigo TGV's isn't this more for people who live in the cities in between Paris and Lyon/Nantes where there is a distance to the nearest TGV station i'm lucky i live within 10kms from valence TGV so if i was going to Paris on the cheap i'd get a Ouigo tgv even when and if they bring back the Nice/Marseille to Paris the only time i'd catch it would be to go to Lyon or down to Avignon instead of catching the TER

Nice video. Thank you for your upload.
Nice and interesting shots. Very nice that you gave many information and it was really cool to see the different impressions of the station, the ride and the train. -
I like the idea to have low-coast and normal trains for high-speed and intercity services. So you have for each category more options, great. Funny for me is that you told years ago in one of your Ouigo-TGV videos that Sncf should run low-coast intercity trains too. Now they do.

I would ride these AS LONG AS THEY'RE CLEAN. I rode a TER recently to Strasbourg. I wish SNCF paid attention. The windows were scratched, the train was dusty and dirty, the pneumatic doors needed service. You can feel the Corails were QUALITY built, but they are begging for a refresh. SNCF NEEDS to order NEW -CORAIL 2- cars from Alstom.
It looks like Ouigo is offereng a superior product on their Corail equipment. Time for SNCF to pay attention to the TER Corails in GrandEst.

reply

Comparing this train to the local offerings where I'm from, I can honestly say I'd rather the Ouigo any time. At least the windows are clean, the seats are all functional and there's no horrible graffiti scrawled over everything. Last time I had to take a local train here, only one coach of fifteen was clean and functional. Others were painted, had cracked windows and seats missing because someone had lit them on fire, slashed the covers or left questionable stains on them.

Informative video! Sorry to be late. but I wanted to let you know I am very much agreement with you. I love the concept but SCNF seem to be willing to skimp on fundamentals simply because this is a low cost, no frills means of travel and that seems very lazy and disrespectful. Did you notice or could you comment if they refurbished the coaches to be accessible for folks like me in need of walkers, wheelchairs and other ambulatory devices?
reply

It-s a shame that the seat covers were not in the same colours as the exterior and likewise with the provision of power sockets. A decent interior would-ve made it bright and zingy! Also some form of at seat catering on the part of SNCF/Ouigo would be a welcome development on this service. Perhaps this is something that SNCF will consider by adding a catering car to the consist in the future?

17: 49 - the -voiture d'encadrement v2n- is the best rolling stock in this video for -classic travel-; )
i think, this -violet nightmare- is possibly mainly an another alibi-manoeuvre. maybe sncf is soon even going to reawake the notorius -Cabine 8-. -Ouigo de Nuit-. thanks a lot to the EU for the silly -railway liberalization-.

reply

Still the classic Corail interior, even the original seats. How pleasantly retro. If only the UK's Train Operating Companies had done the same with HSTs rather than installing new, and invariably less comfortable, seats.
And this modern fixation with power sockets; turn off the phone and the laptop for a while. Relax.

reply

Hello, railway employee from Canada here. I am looking at travelling to France in October, just wondering if SNCF has a pass that will allow me to ride the TGV, and are most SNCF staff able to communicate in English if my French isn-t good enough?
reply

About the matching seats: although I agree it looks a bit shabby why should we dispose perfectly usable seats just because their prints don-t all match? I think there-s no harm in trying to reuse material rather than spending extra money on it.
reply

How on earth anyone could beat the -5 price? You want premium seats and interior for that price?
Honestly, the train looks quite nice and gets me where I want to go. I don't need cars or flights if this can save me hundreds of Euros.

reply

5- for the trip and you are complaining that the entire train does not match the interior designs? How much of your 5- do you think contributes to upgrading the interior? I think you are a pompous ingrate.
reply

Frenchs go poor and poor, that's the biggest point to know all over the world.
Because of the corruption of their politicians and the big waste of money they do constantly for decades now.

reply

Cattle class stuff. But, then again, not everyone can afford a comfortable car to drive, either. Those who don't mind paying for comfort would probably rather jump onboard the TGV anyway.
reply

So they are reusing a 45 years old Bullet train Coaches for a Semi Hi Speed Train service at reduced speed
Perfect.
They still work even after 45 Years in service.
Fantastic

reply

Amusing and irritating that 160 kps is considered 'low speed' rail transport outside of the US. I've seldom been on an Amtrak trip that reached 160 kph for more than brief stretches.
reply

I absolutely love the pink livery! Agree on the chair fabric though, does rather spoil the effect. At least the price is good though, hideously expensive in the UK now -
reply

Sure it would be nice to have a charging point but I actually prefer these interiors to the new ouigo ones. There-s also something so nice about the way these trains ride.
reply

Eye catching exterior. Comfy seats, lower fares and slower speeds makes for a pleasant way to enjoy the scenery.
Thank you Thibault for this good video. ---

Always love to see these classic French engines. No illusions that this isnt budget travel. Cheap and cheerful, nothing wrong with that. Great review, as always.
reply

A progressive video of good step change in French travel. As a foreign tourist it gives me hope of getting around France to see more at a very reasonable price-
reply

very cool! its kinda sad that -low speed- in france is 100mph while the only train currently traveling between sf bay area and la averages like 40 mph: (
reply

If they add Brest-Paris I'll defininely go back to train travel. For me personally, I don't care about power sockets or mismatched coach interiors.
reply

la pauvre loco, elle en aura vraiment vu de toutes les couleurs. avec un logo qui ne rentre meme plus correctement dans sa case d'origine lol
reply

So, they bring back classic trains on classic lines they-ve cut for TGV-only services - interesting!
It-s time for private train operators.

reply

Flixtrain is not very successful sry, they are not cheap, they habe just a few connections and oftes just one train a day, its just sad.
reply

Bonjour, j'ai un question, vous faites comment pour avoir une image de la composition de chaque compartiment sur un trajet?
reply

Oh boo hoo, some seats were different colors and I had to walk around to charge my laptop! You live such a difficult life.
reply

Great - why are so many people obsessed with speed? Plus, the seats look great - without the curse of modern bolt upright headrests.
