Just want to reiterate something glossed over in this and nearly ALL other media attention in this shutdown. Federal employees will receive back pay even if they were not brought in to work during the furlough though that doesn't make this situation any less stressful or problematic for them. Government contractors however will NOT be given back pay. First we were told they could Tele work as long as they didn't use government systems, programs, networks, facilities or equipment. so, nearly impossible. The contracting company will first take our earned time so at least we get a little pay. Then they offer us to use advanced leave, up to 40 hours. For the record I earn 5 hours leave each pay period, you do the math on how long it would take working to build that back up to zero or actual usable time again. Once that is exasperated it is leave without pay. When shutdown is over and we start receiving checks again they will be smaller bc the monies that weren't paid for benefits while shut down will be pulled to cover, that is until the benefits are cancelled completely if this goes much longer. And they are not given the same allowances by private companies with mortgages, bill, etc that Fed workers are being offered. We reach out and are told the offers are only extented to Federal employees. But no. conveniently you only hear those federal employee stories and concerns while the devastation of the thousands of contractors (service workers like janitors, guides, lab techs, it, and administrative) is widely unreported.

The thing that is an issue, at least this is what I see because I live in a government employed town. We have 3 different kinds of employees that gets paid by the government in my area; we have contractors who are working on projects funded by the government, DoD employees who are working, and the people who are dealing with the government shutdown. While the privatized free market has its issues, this goes to show that much of this stuff should be privatized with some subsidies from the government; in order to prevent this from happening. What worries me is that the job security of working for the government CAN create a certain level of complacency in working for the government. While you are secure in your job, you are or seem to be stuck with your pay. But with this shutdown you can see that even though you are guaranteed to have a job before and after the furlough; you are screwed during the furlough. My only solution, besides the idiots on capital hill getting their head's out of their butt's; is for those who are affected to take their job skills into the private market. They are more likely to be appreciated and compensated better and won't worry about a furlough as long as they are doing their job well and pursuing self worth within their own education and experience. I am not saying that I have the only answer, this is what I was simply thinking of since I have been part of 2 of the 3; the private, the contractor and witnessed/talked with those working for the government.

I've been lucky enough to be at college with scholarships, but my family lives paycheck to paycheck. My stepdad has two federal jobs that he was preparing to retire when this shutdown happened. It has hit us hard. They are putting up our land as collateral for a loan so we don't lose our house and so we can pay our bills, but that is taking time to process. The water has been shut down at the house. I usually visit home once a month, and I especially want to now with everything going on, but we can't afford gas. I'm used to living with what the campus supplies, we've never had too much money. But seeing my family suffer like this for a wall that is more symbolic than effective enrages me. I'm having a hard time getting through this video. It's comforting to know my family isn't the only one being hit hard, but in a way makes me feel worse. Some people have it even worse than we do because of it. Pretty soon, the phones may be shut off because we're behind on every bill and my mom hides her car that she's been unable to make payments on so it isn't repossessed. It has been unbelievably hard. If the shutdown goes on too much longer, like Trump is threatening, I don't know how we'll get by. I won't be able to contact my family soon enough, I won't know what is happening or if they're okay and it scares me. The wall isn't worth this, and not much is.

Hey, healthcare worker here I know for some people who are more informed about the healthcare system and pharmaceutical companies might have this info BUT if you are a federal employee unable to pay for medications, I URGE you to reach out to your prescribing physician AND the pharma company selling the drug you need. Many, many physicians will provide a one month emergency prescription for patients in severe need. If that doesnt work for you, which it might not considering that this policy may not extend to all medication, physicians, etc. then I suggest looking into the pharmaceutical company selling the drug. All of the companies that my clinic works with have assistance programs that might be able to help you get medication at discounted rates or even one month free. Huge disclaimer on this of course because situations vary from specialty to specialty but even if this helps one person get meds they need then Im happy to share I advise everyone needing this kind of assistance to speak to their physicians as there are a lot of resources out there to help folks who need medication. Again, I cant stress enough that this will probably not work for everyone, but its always good to do your research and get informed in the event that it can help you

My youngest sister is autistic, her husband has ptsd. They're all on medications that are all together cost 5k. My mom has had to skip days of taking medications that are needed everyday just to make sure she has them. They got there food stamps and my sisters ssi and chid support. But all of that together is enough to pay water and electric. Thank god she owns her house out right so its just property tax. But theyre last bt of money went twords gas for her husband to go to army weekend that he wont get paid for till way after. As someone affected by this shutdown, I do sympathize with those who do not work for the government or who do not rely on the government that lose their jobs as well. It sucks across the board. But I would be remissed if I didn't think that people who work for the government had that trust that those jobs were stable. The longer this keeps going, the more it's going to affect others. I mean, if this carries on past April, where tax refunds are supposed to be issued, (Most times they are issued earlier but in some cases, tax refunds are issued around April) Then if there aren't riots before then, I wouldn't be surprised if there will be one then. As for a future idea, one that will never happen I know, I would be one of the first in the poll lines to vote for a fine that doubles every day in any future shutdowns that the president, vice president, and all other higher end officials in all three branches (yup even court justices) have to pay. So yeah, they would still get paid during a shut down, but that paycheck is getting taken away incrementally every day.

Something people are missing is what happens after 30 days of this. This grants the president the right to actually release many of these people from service. Turns out this is law and when the government operates more efficiently without all the useless bureaucrats, it's allowed to release them to join the private workforce as well they should. When you learn and understand how otherwise immune to termination and how unaccountable they are, you will lose sympathy for their plight. They get great pay and well above average benefits and retirement while the rest of the country actually have to COMPETE for what we have. After watching those affected by the shutdown, I have to say This is what it's like in the competitive marketplace. We ALL go through this and if you fail to recognize this, then it's time to grow up. This isn't their first shutdown either. They should be prepared for this. It happens often enough. With such secure jobs, where is the savings? Why are the best paid, most secure workforce living paycheck to paycheck? Idiots.

It takes two to tango, right? Seems to me that both Dems and Repubs are at fault for this fiasco. I quit watching your show a while ago and realized I made the right choice after you have officially joined the ranks of fake news with your 'coverage of the Catholic school BOYS being harassed by the Indians as well as the Black Israelites I knew you were leftist from your prior coverage, but the depth of your indoctrination while trying to play centralist veiled your true loyalties. I am not even on the right and your actions and lack of acknowledgement as well as retraction and apology to these KIDS and their family is reprehensible. You disgust me with your betrayal of their safety and your fake apology on Twitter as well as your lack of acknowledgement of the true hatred present at that event reinforces your stance on these topics.

That was a real hit take you did about those chaotic high school students. It made you look very foolish and ignorant. If you had only done a bit of fact checking before you ran your misinformed mouth. On the government shutdown, I say good, the democrats need to know that Americans are serious about border security. I like how Nancy Pelosi has called the wall an immorality and yet has walls around her private property. Quite hypocritical. Furthermore, as these gov't employees continue to go unpaid, she still refuses an olive branch the President gives out. Shame on her, Shame on the media who are a bunch of far left winger who don't care about the truth and will gladly lie to get the President and normal Americans and even children for not having the correct political views. God help this country.
