The Illegal Mining Town You've Never Heard Of And The Horror The Gold Rush Has Brought. Mash Rien: Something the armchair heroes aren't considering while getting their keyboards ready to type up a virtual crusade from their throne of moral superiority the simple fact that people are flocking TO these places because shit jobs with shit pay are better than NO jobs with NO pay and watching your children starve to death. Westernized countries are concerned with striking it rich, these people are concerned with getting some god damned food, that's why they don't want oversight or regulation, because it'll cut down on what little they are able to earn. And a government regulating a corrupt AF corporation will only be felt by the workers on the ground, the company won't lose a cent in the whole ordeal. If you want to fix the situation, leave the people alone and bring in enough companies that they're fighting over laborers. Supply vs Demand, wages will go up and so will living conditions as enticement to the work force. Edit: Lived for many years in an extremely poor region of the Philippines and people there are not only content, but genuinely thankful for any form of employment, no matter how horrid and terrible it seems to outsiders- To them, it means they get to eat and pay for sick relatives' medicine.

Serious question: what actually makes a town illegal? Is it because they don't own the land or pay concessions to the government? Otherwise, it's hard to stomach that such a tragic town exists. They absolutely need government intervention to at the very least assure them a living wage, or help from some charities to improve their standard of living if they don't wish to be taxed - not to mention the treatment of women and children is truly dreadful and sickening. Perhaps if the government promises to not tax the populace at all until sufficient standards are met. Maybe part of the fear of taxation comes from a lack of education as well, so if the children attend schools they might be more inclined to pay for their common welfare once they grow up. Certainly, it won't be cheap to fix, but at the moment the government is probably getting no tax from one of the largest gold producers in the world at all anyway, so I think they should just pay up front, asking for nothing in return, and invest in future revenue and the lives of their people.

They chose those living conditions because they do not know any better. And on top of that the mining company is using some very exploitative ways to incentivise them. Of course this is not OK. We are not OK with people being made drug depended then out of there own free will working as slaves for the drug supplier. So we should not be OK with this state of affairs ether. And besides the practice do not only effect the local people but also have a negative effect on the world at larger. That mercury do not just stay in place for example. Externalities and all that. Nothing happens in isolation. Anyone that happen to be OK with this, then you and I likely have very fundamentally different ideas on what is means to be sentient being. What the very goal of our society is.

As this now includes people with restricted rights and children, who can't self-advocate, the people have lost the right to determine how regulated it is. The rights of those who are unable to advocate must be protected. Give a bad person free reign and they'll do bad shit. Right now, we're hearing that this is a place the bad people can gravitate to and act without having to pay for the shit they do. More than that, the more people who do bad shit in a nation, the more people will do bad shit. Because they develop a community that makes doing bad shit a part of being in that community. Unless they're the kind who rejects the current state of things and rejects the community, they'll become bad people themselves.

You definitely need acceptable standards, otherwise the negative aspects of our nature make it a survivary slave fest. Obviously the situation is more complicated than Phil could describe with all the people and it's moving parts but some requirements for basic living standards seems necessary to avoid it being a very unpleasant (to deadly) way to live which is only even possible because the gold can be sold. What actual value does gold have as a resource? You can make shiny shit but how much of it is practical and useful? Do we use it in electronics or is it just bling? Probably why they call it white hell. Rich white people want their shiny bling. To be fair, I don't think it's limited to white people.

It says something that people would rather live in a polluted, violence infested hell hole than live under their government's intervention. People want to be free. People want the chance to get rich. Why can't people get that under their government's over watch? Their government must be very heavy handed and corrupt. The entire system is designed to keep people poor and under control. Unfortunately, people aren't going to get rich under a gold company's aegis either. They are between a rock and hard place. All the world's poor are. What we are doing is not working. We need a new paradigm.

I'm a geologist in the gold exploration industry in North America. There are not any conditions I'm aware of that match this in North America. I know geologists that have worked in Mexico and Northern South America. I have heard tales of cartels and guerilla militants. So this is sad and does not surprise me. The gold industry is dirty beyond this. I cannot say Phiily D is right. I can only say he is not wrong. I want to say there was a National Gepgraphic article about this or something similar circa 2009. Good job Philly D Crew. People should know how their meat is butchered

The big problem with communities like this is that they are very hard to convince to get regulated. It doesn't help that many view the goverment as corrupt, and if you trust it or if you don't take advantage of the situation you are seen as a big fool. Just here in our capital city, it took years to drive away informal bussinesses in a famous shopping gallery. After several failed attempts, it only happened when the mayor and the police occupied them and blocked access for days. And this was after many attempts to formalize said businesses with a lot of benefits inbetween.

Very OT, but a thought about the thumbnail layout You guys leave a sliver of red under the Rogue Rocket logo, which at least on the phone looks like the red bar of watched videos, so it looks like I've started watching the video and left it halfway. I mean when you scroll past it in subscription boxes or recommended etc. Since I sometimes do leave vids halfway if I don't find them interesting, there's a chance I might accidentally think I've seen it and skip the video altogether Small issue and maybe nitpicky, but just thought I'd throw in my two cents

Wow. so yet again, without a bigger government with more control over the lives of their subjects. poverty is the result. let me enlighten you to something. poverty is the default state, it requires effort and the free exchange of goods and services to improve it as well as a population intelligent enough to see that an improvement is available. one mans poverty is another mans utopia. done voluntarily by the participants. want to get rich? Sell the miners stuff instead of being a miner. gold rush economics. I'd be selling duffle bags to 'em.
