Horrifying Explosion in Beirut Caught on Video. Devastating damage. Lebanon updates still coming in The: I can't even describe how I feel about this. My heart goes out to Lebanon. Also the Lebanese red cross is on the grounds so donations there should be good for those looking for a place to start if they wish to donate.

The official story is it's a fireworks warehouse. That didn't look like fireworks explosions have looked in the past. My bet is either storage of explosive materials seized at the port, or an ammo cache. The fire triggered the large one. Even saw a video from a person across an alleyway from the building when the explosion happened. That video made the fire look more like fireworks, but still unsure. That person most likely is one of the dead as they were within a 100 feet or less of the blast. It did not look good from what I saw. The fire was growing and starting to breach the windows near them. They started to back away, then boom. the large one hit.

Not an explosives expert here, but from what I've seen of explosions in the past, particularly devastating explosions in ports, that wasn't a bomb. That was a chemical explosion. Chemicals does include gunpowder for fireworks, but from the size of the blast, the colors in the cloud, and the area it was in, I'd lean more towards hazardous chemicals or fertilizer. It reminds me of the pepcon plant that blew up in the US a few decades back. Even had similar colors to the cloud. Hopefully this wasn't terrorism.

As much as I want to believe that was a fireworks explosion it is just too big. The shock wave and BA BOOM makes me think of a hydrogen or some aerated volatile gas explosion. Alternatively with some reports of low flying jets just before the explosion causes me to worry.
Personally The only people with jets and bombs capable of this wouldn't have a reason to do something this big, it just wouldn't make sense.

When I saw the thumbnail i was ready to compare it to a power plant explosion we had here in Vegas but then I saw the actual thing. absolutely tragic. I hope there were only ten casualties, it looked like so many more. Best wishes to those dealing with the aftermath of this. Seeing the buildings shatter in the shockwave before the smoke covered them was terrifying.

I was listening to this on the radio on work earlier and didn't pay much attention to it. Looking at the footage I thought that it looked bad but then the second one hit and I would honestly be so amazed that only 10 people died. It looked like a small nuke went off

i saw some guy walking around filming and in his vid alone there were like 6 dead bodies on the ground in a 10 metre radius. theres no way the number is this low. keeping the lebanese people and anyone affected in my thoughts, may everyone get the help they need.

When I saw the smoke, I didn't think too much of it, it didn't look like too much damage, but. then the actual explosion happened, and it was like the earth erupted with rage. I'm not sure how I could explain it other then how you expressed it, horrifying.

I saw the smoke, thought wow that must have been a big but NOT horrifying explosion!
How wrong was I
Just a cynical note. some people (terrorists) that want to hurt others will use small bombs to detonate natural explosives!

I was not prepared for that explosion. I saw the smoke at the start, and I was like Okay, that looks bad. But I don't see how - and then the massive one happened, and my mouth dropped.
