Unlocking the Mystery: How Padlocks Work

Unlocking the Mystery: How Padlocks Work

How does a Padlock work, learn from the basics how a padlock works. With thanks to Squarespace for sponsoring this video Walde: Should be noted that the reason why lockpicks work is manufacturing tolerances, which causes all the pins and holes to be slightly out of alignment and different size. So when you try to push the pins up, the one that is the most out of alignment will click first, and that causes the plug to rotate ever so slightly so that one pin will stay at the shear line and can no longer fall back down.
Then you keep that up until all the pins click and stay at the correct height and the lock will open. That's also why you need to keep turning the lock and hold the pressure.

I don't get it, the shapes on the key is what keep the pins in the position so you can turn the plug. With a picking tool, how do the pins stay on the sheer line? Cause as soon as i release the first pin and move to the second, i can see the first one back in it's original position. As it would be normal i think. So am i doing something wrong or what? I'te tried with 3 different locks. Door locks, not pad locks, but still.

Two questions for confirmation.
After inserting the KEY fully into the PLUG, which part of the KEY comes in contact with the KEY PINS? Is it the small VALLEYS on the key or the small PEAKS on the key? Your animation shows it's the valleys, not the peaks.
Also with no key inserted, what prevents the key pins from coming all the way down and some falling out of the lock?

Hello, I really appreciate your work, indeed your work encouraged many of us, at least me to pursue more deep into the technologies in different fields of engineering, which is really enjoyable. Thanks!
But would you please provide more details about other types of locks used today, including the smart locks,
thanks

Probably would be best to say somewhere that picking is a hobby some people like to do, and there are legality issues on how to legally own and use picking tools. Not everyone who picks locks is a criminal, it's a pretty fascinating hobby

Thanks for the video. Is the key pins and driver pins joined magnetically? How come the key pins can rotate with the cylinder but not fall down when the key is removed? This was not explained in the video.

If LPL has taught me anything, this padlock is vulnerable to shimming and having the pins pushed fully above the shear line. Inexcusable design flaw that has been known to padlock designers since the 1980s.

The padlock remains locked until a unique shaped key releases the internal mechanism and unlocks the device
Hello, I'm the Lockpicking Lawyer and today I'll be picking this lock with a blunt sausage

Could you guys do a video on cryopumps and more videos on vaccuum. im studying to be a cleanroom technician in a wafer fab and ive found your videos to be super helpful! THANK YOU

Hi Paul. Can you add control panel single line diagram and wiring diagram for control circuit (not power circuit) to your video list as well? I have trouble dealing with those.

Your like the infographic show but for engineering. Would you do a video on fluid mechanics, the basics, I like the way you layout your videos it keeps me captivated.

It's gets more in-depth lol wait till you learn about the high security side: side bars, rotating pins, active elements, safe locks, disc detainer, and more

So ive been watching lock picking videos a lot recently, and you had to upload this at the time I start watching lock picking videos a lot XD

i have been trying to pick my lock for 3 hours just for me to realize i was turning the tension tool the wrong way

The padlock presented in this video is vulnerable to overlifting xD
Great video, I loved the diagrams and animations!

This video is about how to quickly and efficiently unlock a padlock.
So naturally my reaction is a laugh!
