How This Chair Conquered the World Funny story, but my dog actually recognises monoblock chairs.
See, shes not allowed on any furniture inside the house, but we let her sit on the swing on our balcony. Balcony swings are a thing in my family (not sure why, but literally everyone has one, so we very soon found out our dog decided if shes allowed on one swing shes allowed on any swing. Then, one time, when we were visiting my grandma and sitting on the balcony, the swing was full, so my grandma let her sit on a monoblock chair. We thought she would understand that to mean that shes allowed on outside furniture, right? Yeah, no.
(Just a bit of extra context: Many of us have dogs, theyre either pals or ignore each others existence, so everyone brings their dogs to big get-togethers. My dog in particular loves humans, and will only pay attention to small children and other dogs long enough to scold them if they annoy her)
Picture getting ready for a big family dinner at someone elses house. The table is getting set, people are bringing out the food, the children are sent to grab more chairs from outside. and as soon as a monoblock chair is set down, my dog hops right on and refuses to budge. After realizing why she did it and having a laugh about how shes technically not breaking any rules, we decided to just let her have it and just pushed her away from the table. But yeah, since then if she sees an empty monoblock, shes sitting on it, no matter where it is.

I do not particularly love it.
However, I can say that its design and cheapness gave it the prevalence.
The cheap aspect, demonstrated in this video, make it available around the World, in large quantities.
It is normal for a family to have 4, 6, 8, or more around the garden. As it is normal for a business (e. g, a cafe) to have dozens of them.
Regarding its design, it is ergonomic, can be stacked easily (both placing and removing it, it is light enough to carry and move, it is capable of withstanding big vertical forces (heavy individual, and it can be left outside in the elements (but it should not.
This two aspects gave it a quite remarkable space around the World.
Hence, I think it is impossible to not see a quite positive result on its design.
However, its ubiquitous state, coupled with low price, and often short longevity (mainly due to being left in the elements, gave it the connotation of being bad - which they are definitely not.

this chair is the physical manifestation of america's power and influence and its essential immortality
the only two things more illustrative than this chair are coca cola and blue jeans
american culture is everywhere
american culture is everyone's culture
american culture supercedes AND permeates yours
american culture is simple, cheap, good, and adaptive
and thats why we dominate the world, thats why were here to stay dominant, and why if we fall we all pay the price.
not bombs, not politicians
but money, brands, and simple easy to make and cheap items for everyday enrichment.

The modern monoblock chair is actually considered a cultural monolith here in Brasil! They are used in many popular restaurants and bars in often times medium-low income areas (which defines the majority of the country. With the added fact that you can drink outside (i. e. the sidewalk, these restaurants and bars became focal communal aggregators and public places of conversation, and the chair - with the monoblock square table - had a constant presence

Although they are apparently universal and omnipresent, I have never been in any environment with them at my disposal or perhaps my Persona automatically avoids them this verifiable entropy, becoming -famous- solely and exclusively for being cheap, bad environmentally and horrible in terms of design, being that The only one I sat on was unstable and mobile, two characteristics that chairs do not accept as such.

I call this grandpa chair. Idk, prolly because my grandparents had tons of this chair in their old house, I kinda think that the chair is an epitome of old people. Like, if this chair is ever reborn to be a human, they-d pass all the life stages and immediately be born as a grandpa

These chairs are everything wrong with capitalism. Useless product that breaks easil, isn't comfortable, does is job poorly, but is produced because it is so cheap.

Sure it is not valid 100% but I think more than 80% percent of the world might have two things that common in 2023 these monoblock chairs and smartphones.

Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God, it even gives me power.
