Well looks like I gonna have comment here too. Hallo again from Denmark history time. As you Said in video about professional viking armies are true. In a decade before Ethelred the unready took the English throne. Denmark had just been unified into a single state under Harold Bluetoth around 965(also the year Harold converted to Christianity. Even though it woud take another 150 years befor Odin, Thor and the went went away. Harold was powerfull enough to make the rulers of Zealand (and the Island ) and scania(in modern sweden. That area was danish untill 1660. When Denmark lost the scanian wars with sweden ) and norway submit to his rule. Suddenly the King of Denmark coud raise huge armies. And fist recorded raid viking in ethelreds reign took place in 983. So it wasnt Svend Forkbeard Who started the viking raids in England to collect danegeld. But his father Harold Bluetoth. But in 986 Harold was overthrown and killed on Svend orders after rebillion/civil war. And Svend took the danish Crown for himself. Svend was around 26 at the time. And some years where Svend conslidsted his rule and becoming the most powerfull ruler in Scandinavia. We still consider him of our greatest rulers here in Denmark. Thats when the raids started. in 990es started. But Svend didnt start it. His father did.

I find it interesting that when my ancestors left Scandinavia and settled Scotland, Normandy, and the Danelaw, the local population reacted much the same way as modern European nationalists react to Syrian and African refugees. and yes, my ancestors really DID come to steal the Saxon people's land and money and women! The Saxons did the same thing to Roman Britain, and the Romans did the same to the Celts, and later generations of Britons did exactly the same thing to the Native Americans. Really, pretty much all of history consists of people from one country travelling to another country to take their land and their money and their women. so why should modern Europe buck the trend? Trade and population migration are good for the gene pool and the economy, and leads to an influx of new technologies and cultural ideas, while the best elements of the original culture generally remain strong. Hey, Canada was built on immigration!

Then it seems that greed, disregard and disloyalty eventually decided his fate. I think Cnut himself wanted rid of this man, afraid of what he achieved from so little, and for the fact that he was ready to betray even the king who supplied him with all that power. Also, leaving him alive could have caused a great political disruption for Cnut, especially because many noblemen already hated/mistrusted him, which could have eventually developed into a civil war.

Great Video and here is a like. One small criticism. As you tell the tale you don't really hint that this is an awful brutal Villain. Eadric sounds like most other Ambitious nobles during these times. Maybe add some flair to add to his Villainy. Please more of this History, as an American with Irish English Scottish Scandinavian descent its great to hear of this part of history.

Aethelred truly was unready to be king since he was only 12 when he became king. My 13 year old would never be ready to be a king at this age. 12 & 13 year olds have just hit puberty. They are trying to figure out their own bodies. So I know they lack the maturity to rule well.

I wrote an essay on Cnut in high school, each time I wrote his name spell check would suggest Cunt.
It was then that I learnt how to adjust spell check settings.
Before I handed the paper in I did a word search for Cunt, it appeared about 3 times!

the Martyr has to be one of the worst titles to get. Had Aethelred not been so unready the English language would be quite different as William the Conqueror would not have had much claim to the throne

To be honest, he did what he could to survive, this Eadric Streona. Sure he was a dick for switching sides, almost reminding me of Lu Bu again, but still, he was being. pragmatic with his choices.

Eadric was like Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick with his turncoat behavior & trying to manipulate kings & like Lord Stanley who sided with the winner during a battle.

I'm sure the Eadric planned that retreat to facilitate Cnut's victory. That' what Edward Ironside got for trusting someone who would betray his own kin.

Great video once again! Have you considered touching on Matilda of Tuscany and the investiture controversy? A very underrated figure and time in European history.

With the Early English and Vikings looking so much alike in battle one wonders how they were able to tell each other apart.
