Normans in Italy Wars of the Lombards & Byzantines (1008-1053) Pankratos: This video makes it sound like the Holy Roman Empire was something tangible and palpable, when it was just illiterate Gemanics always roaming and living in the abandoned Military outposts of their Roman Masters. There is no Archaeological evidence for the Holy Roman Empire, the Lombards or Charlemagne. they are all Christian Vatican inventions, made up Diring the Dark ages and reinforced in the Renaissance.
The Germans were still living under Roman Rule, expect that this time it was the Vatican, who took over all of that was od the Romans including their property, among them the Germans, Celts and Gauls who were owned by the Romans. Quite literally, Rome was defeated by Eastern Rome, and so the great Rivalry between East and West, Constantinople defeated Rome, and the Vatican took it's place in the West. Constantinople became more powerful and the Vatican betrayed it to the Ottomans, by sending the Crusaders to destroy many parts of Constantinople. The Crusaders were mainly Italians and Venetians as well as Men of the Balkans.

When after the conquest the Normans of England learned that Palermo alone pays more tax than the whole of England, many of them packed their family and headed for Sicily. One of them was the Bishop Odo, the brother of William famously depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry, regent of England while William was fighting in France. Odo made it to Palermo where he died, and is buried there in the Norman Chapel. William conquered England to use it as a cash cow to pay for his war in France, but it turned out to be a disappointment. Sicily was the goldmine, not England.

I'm only now realizing how vital mercenaries have been throughout the manifold wars fought - whether of a trifle or the forward a grand mandate. There seem always be men willing to fight for pay. I wonder if much research has been done on the role of mercenaries in particular and whether or not they sometimes affect the rise and fall of kingdoms. I would imagine that lack of loyalty would mean that they cannot be trusted to remain to the bitter end - always in search of wealth from the highest bidder.

Love your focus on the lesser known. What a crazy complicated time in southern Italy. Ive been trying to get my head around the 11th century situation there for a couple weeks now, and this video really helps. Crazy that a relatively minor Lombard uprising resulted in eastern Rome losing Italy to a bunch of Norman ruffians, losing their (probably winning) position in Sicily, and in the process inviting the Normans into their neighborhood in the Balkans.

Does anyone out there know if there is any actual Archeological evidence for the presence of Lombards or Normans in Italy. I have searched for it, and have found absolutely NOTHING. I think that the presence of the Normans and Lombards in Italy is as false and fantastical as that of Charlemagne. everything in the Dark ages is a big mess, and eveything during that time appears to be completely invented by Christians.

At 2: 10 there is NO ARCHEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE for the existence of Melus of Bari or any of the Lombards. I have looked, there is NOTHING. Christian Records are incredibly untrustworthy and false, especially during the Dark Ages. We need to come clean about the imminence lies that modern Academia in collaboration with the Vatican are dumping on all of us, who want to know the truth.

I've always been interested in Italian history from the fall of Rome into the Middle Ages. I've read plenty about the various duchies and kingdoms but was always confused over who controlled what and why they came about. This video did an awesome job of clarifying and answering these questions for me. Thanks for your work!

This video makes it sound like there were no Italians in Italy. the Italians have not changed Generically since Etruscan and Roman times, they are all Haplogroup J2, so this fantasy that Lombards and Normans existed in Italy is completely DEBUNKED BY GENETICS.

My family hails from Piemonte, Italy. But unlike a lot of Italians the men in our family stand between 6'1-6'3 except in the case of my father's brother who was 6'7. I'm fairly certain I have germanic blood in me even though I sport the dark hair and olive skin.

Thanks for this video! Its hard to trace and understand the genetic make-up of my ancestors without knowing the full story. Most history books and videos only discuss the rise and fall. then straight to the renaissance. Thats quite a gap in history missing there

There's an ancient Chinese saying that goes Don't invite in the tiger to chase out the wolf. That's what Melus did. He invited in the Normans to chase out the Byzantines and ended up losing everything to the Normans. Go Normans! An ambitious and competent race.

The germs who actually revered and loyal to Rome culture:
1. Franks
2. Ostrogoth
3. Visigoth
4. Suevi
Plain barbarian germs:
1. Lombard
2. Anglo Saxon
3. Vandals
Eastern Rome should never took out Ostrogoth.

Charlemagne was an INVENTION by Christians. so were the Lombards and the Franks. the Normans were never in Sicily, they never went anywhere in the Mediterranean, and there is no Archeological evidence for their presence.

Would love to see a video on the illyrians, the medieval balkan kingdoms all the way up to the ottoman period. Also, would love to see a video on Arius and learn more about his exile in the Balkans.

So the contenders were Viking Scandinavians but fighting bizantines, and there were also Germans but everything is set on southern Italy. this is the most confusing war of all time

Didn't take long to figure out who the narrator was. it's the guy that actually writes whilst into the script 3 dozen times. Makes me a bit nutty listening to this goof.

An excellent and beautiful presentation -- a perfect mixture of well informed historical commentary, maps, illustrations, and paintings. History at its best. Thank you.
