Nicephoros Phokas: Pale Death of the Saracens (950-969) Byzantium Documentary
video description
The siege of Crete was violent just as much as the aggression of the previous 4 centuries was, so on Crete, the got what they deserved. The aggression pre-dated the Crusades which were a direct consequence. It was the who attacked Christian pilgrim caravans, not the knights attacking caravans.

Nicephoros should be written Nikephoros, as the first part of his name means victory=Nike, the pronounciation is totally wrong. Phoros, the second part comes from the verb fero= bring, so his name means he who brings victory. By writing and pronouncing it incorrectly, its meaning is lost. Greek people are everywhere, next time ask a Greek to make sure you are writing and pronouncing these names correctly. Greek people listening to your otherwise excellent video do not understand whom you're talking about, at least not at first.

Whether you are willing to recognize his military brilliance or not, you may not ignore his very cold blooded gangsta nickname he earned by bold and resolute aggression in an empire often characterized by subversion, indirect tactics, and intrigue.
Respect sir, but next time round don't punish a close ally publicly and allow him to live. Living resentful commanders tend to be liability to longevity.

Greeks comprised only a small corner of the vast Eastern Roman Empire. Since the Roman Empire spoke Greek in the East, Greece was just one of many regions speaking Greek, whose inhabitants began to self-identity as Roman. That is why Greeks called themselves Romans. Eastern Romans were Greek-speaking Romans but they 100% were not all Greeks. They were Romans.

The Byzantine empire was clearly, despite its multinational dimension, a GREEK empire while its neighbours considered it so, and whose unity was based on the power of authority, in the dominance of Orthodoxy and the use of Greek as the official language.

The Phocas family was always associated with the province of Cappadocia in eastern Anatolia; its actual lineage seems to have been a mixture of Armenian and Greek.

Been on vacation so I'm late to the party. Wow! This was your best narrative yet. Gripping, fascinating and tragic. Thanks for the podcast recommendation, I was really hoping we'd get this. I'm still working my way through the History of Rome podcast, but look forward to this one next.

With the collapse of the empire in the west, its eastern counterpart became, in reality, an entirely new and independent state, at once Greek by language and Roman in name: 'A Greek Roman empire'.

Very much on the side of the Arab Muslim conquerors, and critical only of the Byzantine Christian rulers. Not a balanced presentation, in my view. The Baghdad Caliphate forgot to learn the basic lesson from history that the larger size of empire, the harder it is to maintain.

Great video, as always, Pete. But dont forget that in Greek (ancient and modern) and Latin, C is always pronounced as the K sound, always, no exceptions. Using C for the S sound came much later. Also, the Romans changed the -os of Greek words to the more-Latin sounding -us.

Excellent. part from the names.
Please ask from some help!
It's a pitty.
Greek language is an etymology created language so are the names. The meaning is lost here.
NIKIFOROS FOKAS for example, it easy to be spelled in order to sound right.
THANK YOU!

The soul and only reason for ottoman success is byzantium and bulgaria hating each other for the most of their shared history
Even tho both states where orthodox christian and worked wonders when they would work together instead against each other

Who wants a tv show based on Nikephoros or Justinian or anything related to Eastern Rome ( Which I view as the underrated brother of the Western Roman Empire) other than 1453 siege. I just dont get why Hollywood hates Eastern Rome so much

Are you telling me that 2 Christian Mongol generals managed to spare the Christians from the massacres of Baghdad and Aleppo. However Eastern Romans didn't bother to spare the lives of their fellow Christian Greeks in Crete!

Well three are my favourites and it happens to have the same name all of us. Ioannis I Tzimisces, Ioannis II Komnenos and Ioannis III Doukas Vatatzis. I also like Romanos IV Diogenes

What do you exactly mean by During the dark days of the 9th C 1: 59
How was it dark? From what perspective are you talking?
I sense that you have a bit of rudeness and ignorance.

Byzantine history is totally underrated. Im surprised this video is one of the least views when Nikephoros Phokas is one of the best military commanders of his age.
