In May 1813, as Napoleon launches a desperate bid to save his empire following the disastrous defeat in Russia, the situation in Spain is particularly precarious. French forces have been weakened to make up for the enormous losses in Russia. But Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese army, as well as the Spanish guerrillas, are stronger than ever. Wellington's advance into Spain will liberate Madrid a second time, and conclude with the final showdown of the Peninsular War - the Battle of Vitoria

we really need a hbo got style 15-20 season series of napoleon in all the grand details. from toulon til waterloo.
sean bean for wellington: )
we also need a hbo got style 15-20 season series of the craziest captain in history. captain thomas cochrane. his naval life was insane. just insane
have russel crowe reprise the role of cochrane(fyi he fictionally played him in master and commander as captain aubrey but he is based on cochrane)
these would make the most epic tv series' of all time.
edit: they can do the spin off of cochrane when he becomes a scourge for napoleons french navy and has napoleon personally order his capture. dead or alive. joaquin phoenix is playing as napoleon in a new ridley scott film. perfect casting!

I've noticed a theme in all of Napoleans battles. He wins when he has greater numbers and the other side is led by poor commanders who have no business leading an army. The second he doesn't have both of those, Napolean loses. The same holds true for the greater French Army. Meanwhile, commanders like Wellington win with often times fewer soldiers or with less than reliable soldiers (like the Spanish. Imho, Napolean wasn't a great general at all but just an average general, surrounded by bumbling buffoons, that won only when the idds were greatly in his favor. Wellington though, was a great general.

I hope you enjoy the latest installment of our Napoleonic Wars series! Big thanks also to Jorge Planas Campos & Antonio Grajal de Blas for sharing their research on Peninsular War casualties ahead of publication - there's a link to one of their articles in the video description which contains details on their methodology. Big thanks also to Nuneaton Museum & Gallery for kind permission to use the superb 'The Battle of Vitoria' painting by James Prinsep Beadle.

It was one of the last great mistakes that Napoleon ever made: he never bothered to study Wellington's campaigns and battles. If he had, Napoleon would've realised what he was up against before launching his final campaign in 1815, and he would've been far more circumspect. Napoleon was one of the greatest commanders of any era, but Wellington was one of the greatest commanders of THE era, and one of the only men alive with any chance of beating him.

The map is wrong. Catalonia was annexed to the French empire during those few years (and segragated from Spain. There, we didn't have Joseph as a king, we had Napoleon. I know the video is focused on the militar campaign, but visual information should ve accurate

What a truly superb series this is! Many, many thanks to all those involved and please, keep up the good work. I am sure I recognise the narrator's voice but cannot put a name or face to it. Please, tell us who it is and restore our ability to get a nights sleep!

I infinitely appreciate your contribution to the culture of the people. I wish you could do something about the issue of the Spanish tercios, that famous army division for several centuries and its battles and contributions to world military strategy. Thanks a lot.

One of the tragic errors of Napoleon was to establish his familymembers in decisive positions where they were not trained for. Too many generals and marshalls of questionable past were finally his sad destiny.

The Iron Duke of Wellington was extremely successful. He had Genius in both defence and offence. His career from Assaye to Waterloo, including the Liberation of all Iberia, was a Phenomenal Journey.

narrator could ask any spanish speaker how names are pronounced (accent location within the word) before recording narrations, and it would be perfect:
cortes de cadiz, diaz. etc

You seem to improve general history with tales of English grandness. The battle at Waterloo was more complicated then you suggest. The role of Wellington is being still discussed.

Vittoria is one of my favourites. A napoleonic defeat, an anglo-portuguese-spanish experienced and well-organized army and a battle of maneuver and aggression. Amazing.

It's interesting that five million pounds was also offered to the coalition in a way this sealed Frances fate, The only hope was separate peace were ruined in this.

By all accounts, napolean was Italian looking. Ie Mediterranean features. I often wonder how he was able to lead the French nation who were mostly caucasoid.
