Sorry but there may not be a fifth season of 'The Last Kingdom' - I do hope this is changed, it is indeed an excellent series. .

This video is completely incorrect. The unification of England came from William the First's son at a later date in the 1000s AD. My family had land in England that we ruled alone. We helped William become king and made an alliance with him, but did not join England. We finally joined England with his son who became king. That is when England was truly United. Those think this statement I made to be false. I have proof and a family book that state this facts and as well by our ancestor Edward the Third and later by another ancestor King Henry the 4th.
This small local King only joined towns in the south, and none in the northern England area. So, England was not joined together yet. You need to read the history books better. Some claim that this person was the last king, but he wasn't the last. Williams the First's father, King Robert the First, was the last true Celtic King. Others not Celtic was not truly a king of England as we know it today.

Sorry if this has been mentioned here already but I cannot read every one of a thousand posts
Athelstan was buried at Malmesbury abbey, a place well worth a visit for anyone into history.
The town of Malmesbury has many things named after Athelstan including a museum, road, coach company, and a cinema at one time.
Highgrove is nearby as is the village of Sherston, itself with historical connections according to local history - Edmund Ironside fought in the battle of Sherston as did John Rattlebone who has a local pub named after him, where princes Harry and William were often found when at Highgrove

I came here because of the Netflix series, the last kingdom. Having heard this, the Netflix series is actually quite well written to history. other than the main character and warrior. who I was half hoping to hear in this audio. Yes, I know, he was a fictitious character but all the viking ones were mentioned true to the Netflix series. Anyway, this history should be taught in schools. not the way we were 45yrs ago. This is truly interesting history.

Offa of Mercia was known as Rex Anglorum or Rex Totius Anglorum Patriae. Aethebold, Offa's predecessor, was known as Rex Britiania. Aethelstan is certainly the first king, post Danish invasion to legitimately be referred to as Rex Anglorum. In fact no English king until Edward I held as much terriroty as Aethelstan held. However like Offa before him, he had real trouble passing on that legacy of power once he died.

I can't beleive I'm going to say this but why did the british let the French colonize north Africa. England had the best kings. Has the best policy great history. Today all the english territories are doing well at least some of them but the french colonies are living in ignorance by far it was the worst colonizers full of Israel politics. What made England great not letting in strangers into thier politics.

Athelstan - a king almost no one in the UK is ever taught about. In fact most people in the UK have never even heard of him. For some bizarre reason UK history as taught in UK schools leaps from the Romans to the Norman invasion of 1066 with no mention of the English or how the country of England came into being. Bizarre.

All these local rulers, perhaps at the level of a duke at best, called themselves kings. How valid were these titles? In other parts of Europe, much more potent ruler had to be appointed by an emperor, like the Holly Roman emperor and approved by the pope.

Please don't use the word Coronated. A person is crowned, not coronated. Coronate is improperly derived from coronation, but crown is the original and still standard form of the verb. Coronate means crown shaped, ie that bulge is coronate in shape.

Wouldn't the battle have been on the western side of England? Did Olaf sail all the way around Scotland when there was a much shorter distance across to Strathclyde or the Mersey river? Easier for Owain of Strathclyde and any Welsh to join him too.

Problem with the English was the knights had to come from the rich and the population was poor and was used as foot soldiers and did not get training and equipment and a chance of making better life for them and family.

It feels like Aethelfled's role laying the bases for unification alongside her brother Edward were overlooked in this video (and in raising aethelstan. Such an underrated leader. Long live the Lady of Mercia!

Has anyone actually heard old English? It sounds like German. Interesting how modern English got rid of the rolling tongue sounds. If you lived in Alfreds time you wouldnt understand a word anyone was saying.

Why did alfred get the name the great when all he did was win a couple of defensive battles, why didn't aethelstan get a cool name or a statue in Winchester?

I think this is the best part of Britains history. The involvement of the viking and the huge influence they had over parts of england.

Good content. Only wish it could be rerecorded with the music lower volume. Distracting and hard to hear narration at many points.
