Guthrum (Godorm) is probably the father of King Gorm and the vikings certainly didn't extort as much as possible from the local residents - they never did, when they wanted to settle down! On the contrary the main reason they often managed to hold on to land, even after the main forces had left, was that the treated the locals much better than the feudalistic lords and quickly gained local support. That's why Danelagen came to be. It means Danish Law, which ruled this area.
