In all historical annals is used word Turkic. Western chroniclers. were using this word for all nomads raiding from east, does not matter who was in that raids, coz they even did not have a chance to check or talk to that people: D Same it was with Avars or Huns, it just described this raiders generally. Or word Germans for all barbars on the north is a same example: D
To central Europe were coming many other nomads even later, up to 15. century. Ch(k)azars, Cumans, Mongols invasions, Roma-Gypsy etc.
Origin of words like(Ugric, later Hungarian) and Magyar are still in historical debates, there are many versions build only on Legends or on anonymous annals from 15. century: D We just call them ugric people.
Same, behind that expression - build and set up Kingdom of Hungary is many many other things and facts, and for sure in Christianized Latin Europe, during crusades to North and East, it was rly not like that:
- some pagan nomads came
- after raiding, kill everyone, settled in, in one day raised all food, agriculture
- from one day to an another, they switch from pagans to Christians and got Christian crown from Pope to create kingdom of Hungary: D
- adopt all German and Slavic basics from (Bavarians and Great Moravians), policies, fortress architecture, European weaponsmith, coz they teach them for free: D
- etc
But, yeah, it is nice Legend and entertaining staff for short popular video. Same like mysterious Nordic Vikings topics: D

Thanks for this background information. I know there is controversy concerning the history of the Hungarian people. It is hard for me to believe that those of us Hungarians are purely of Magyar descent. After the defeat and later the death of Attila, not much has been said of the Huns who settled in the plains of Hungary. There has to be some Hunnic blood(genetics) in the Hungarian people. It may also be the western components of Xiongnu were the ancestors of not only the Huns and but also other nomadic people such as the Magyars that later invaded Eastern Europe from the western Steppes of Asia. The names of the people may change due to the mingling of the genetics in the offspring of the conquered with those of their conquerors as well as the assimilation and mixing of culture and language, but are not the Hungarian people the descendands of the Huns and mainly the Magyars? Ultimately, could these two groups possibly be the descendants of the Xiongnu?

The conversion of the Magyars to Western Chrisitianity was everything but gradual. Significant part of them was already montheistic like (de facto) Eastern - Christian (Danube Bulgarian influence), Muslims (like Volga Bulgars) or even Jewish (like the aristocracy of Kazar Kaghanate. However, it was intruduced as an opressive state building project performed fast and ruthlessly by the leader of the Megyer tribe. And the originator was the German Emperor. From the perspective of the Megyer tribe (most probably one of the few of the Finno-Ugric speaking tribes of this confederacy called in this video Magyars) it was brilliant political move it secured its position and became the ruling elite of a brand new feudal kingdom.

hungarian kingdom started 1001 a. d. -1918. cool video. there are croats and white croats on this hungarian map. but there is no Dutchy of Croatia in the begining of the video. Magyars never menaged to conqurer Croatia. nobody did. EVER! they tricked us for the crown of croatia so we entered the union 1102 with document named Pacta conventa. on the other hand DAI from Porfirogenet is proven to be written from several people not the emperor himself alone. i trust persian cronicles more. and european of course.

300 years later they fearlessly battled the invading Mongols, and in the process lost close to half their population. Soon thereafter they pioneered a fortified defensive system vs future Mongol invasions and by doing so stemmed the tide from the East, only then to have to deal with the Turks from the South 200 years later! The Turks were eventually pushed back in large part with a large Hungarian contribution. Nowadays, they are leading the fight vs corporate globalism which threatens to enslave us all!

Great video and It's always great to see Western Europeans covering Hungarian history, when you were talking about 907, I'm not sure if you covered the battle of Pressburg (Bratislava) where the Franks united to kill all Hungarians with a 2-4x larger army than the Hungarians and still lost. Also you didn't show the largest Hungary became in the middle ages and why they lost all their land in 1918 (treaty of Triannon) but still a great vid: )

Hungary in Europe is an anomaly. The language is Asian, but the population is European, mostly Slavic. And these Slovaks are the original inhabitants of the Carpathian Basin. The absolute majority of the population of the Republic of Hungary is not ethnically Hungarian, it is predominantly Slavic. And continually European. Only the Hungarian name and the agglutinating language remained. There are no Hungarian genes.

I think you mean instead of Bulgaria. Bulgarian Empire, or perhaps even. Second Bulgarian Empire. It wasnt just bulgarians in those lands you know. well obviously.
Looking at this vid however im a bit amused by thought of nationalist hungarians claiming they were first in Transylvanian area. nomads that were all over the place, no offece meant, but thats history for ya.

It's a little bit misleading to talk about the Catholic West or Roman Catholicism before the Schism of 1054. Yes, there were political, cultural, and even religious spats between East and West before the Great Schism, but both East and West thought of themselves as Catholic. In a certain sense, that is still true, but it was true in a deeper sense then.

They had the great history and great commanders (Attila etc) in the history. Also they ruled the Central Europa many years with Turks and other nomadic groups(Huns, Avars etc.

Quite remarkable to have watched a video on Magyar invasions in Europe, and not once have heard reference to the Great Moravian Empire, or the Slavs that had lived in Pannonia. Not to mention the assimilation and adoption of the Moravian nobility and culture that helped form the early Hungarian kingdom.

A good video about this period in the Hungarian history. I only missed that you did not mentioned the battle of Brezalausburg from 907, which sealed the Hungarian conquest, defeating a huge Western Europen army, which invaded Hungary in order to kill all the Hungarians.

Wow, they were brutal. So were the Magyars ethnically central Asian? It seems there were many instances of eastern tribes/ empires attacking west across the Eurasian Steppe. Are there many cases of the opposite happening?
