Fun Fact: After WW2 and the foundation of the UN and the Security Council, France was initially not allowed to be one of its permanent members, only USA, UK, China and USSR. The problem was that after WW2, China resumed its Civil War and when it became certain that the communist side was going to win and take over China, USA and UK let France become a member so that there would be 3 capitalist/western powers (France, UK and USA) vs only 2 communist/eastern ones (USSR and China.

The way you describe the invasion of Vichy France by the axis in november 1942 is a bit misleading: the axis invasion was an immediate response to the invasion of northern Africa (Marocco, Algeria) by the allies (US and British empire. It did not come out of nowhere, as several French officials (civil and military) cooperated with the allies and joined them in the fight against the axis troops there.

The government of France could not get their shit together like their military. Old ideal's of the WWI were still in the minds of the old generals. Attack of maneuver and speed the Germans were good at and combat veterans. Communication radio's were standard equipment in the Wehrmacht armored units.

Their last act wasn't scuttling their fleet. It was the Vichy French Milice and other Vichy honor guard and paramilitaries fighting in Paris, etc. against any Free French and French Resistance forces between 1943 and 1944.

French Resistance is so overrated by cinema. It only really started to matter in 1941, when the Communist joined the fight and it only became relevant in 1943-1944 when the Allies started to close in on Germany.

1/3 of the entire evacuation of troops were French we didnt leave them all behind but we wanted to get our own men out first, 100k French out of 140k French troops were saved that day

The French were collaborators with Germany for most of the war, France. For all intents and purposes they should be considered part of the Axis, same with Finland.
