Ten Minute History - The Viking Age Short Documentary T4N7: According to wut I've heard, the reason the Vikings left North America was cuz his sister broke a law they had about claiming land from each other n the penalty was death but since he had to order it, even if he didn't do it himself he was still legally the one who would've killed her n killing ur own kin was an even greater crime. So stuck between a rock n hard place he opted to give say that no one gets anything now n they all had to give up the land they claimed n leave. Can't remember the source I heard it or remember the first name of Eriksdotter (cuz in case u didn't figure it out Erikson gets his last name by being the son of Erik the Red n so his daughter was Eriksdotter.
Fun fact, there's Magic: the Gathering cards loosely based off these siblings. She is a boss, he's a chump, she sacrificed herself to save him n I still think he didn't get away. Their story is told over the course of a handful of cards over decades of the game's history.

Oh sorry bro you're definitely mistaken about Iceland being uninhabited.
Irish monks were definitively inhabiting Iceland prior to the Viking expatriation that left Norway somewhere between 849 and 874. I tend to believe slightly on the earlier side of that range.
The Norwegians completely, shall we say uninhabited the hermetic Irish monks enjoying the solitude and contemplative opportunity afforded by the Islands isolation

The Normans were 'Northmen' after all.
After playing AC Valhalla I now want to see AC Conquest. Sod it, my one hope for AC Infinity is that you basically have the run of history and can backstab and loot your way through the entire ancient and mediaeval periods.

Hes wrong alone 45 seconds in! Vikings were the warrior class of people, not every Scandinavian was called a Viking! Farmer were just farmer! It would the same as saying every Japanese person was called samurai which is not the case this guy is a mong!

I am coming to this 3 years late, and just after watching 6 seasons of Vikings, and 4 seasons of Last Kingdom! I also joke that I am a Thor Worshiper, and tell people that my God has a hammer! That's a joke as Christ used a hammer as he was a carpenter.

Disputed but the most common idea are reasons
A: The land they found in North America simply wasn't good farming land, it could support some fishing stations but nothing significant.
B: Angry locals.
C: It was too far away.

(6: 48) You can see Harold Bluetooth's sigil atop the Jelling Stones he carved. That's how we know he carved them. ;)
Harold Bluetooth was also known to wonder around obnoxiously while apparently having a conversation with his inner thoughts.

Just don't mix up Viking and Norseman. Viking is a profession not a people or culture. We did not speak viking or honor viking gods we spoke Norse and honored the Norse pantheon of gods.
Oh and BTW the Norse are not only Norwegians.

reply

A reason the settlements in America didnt last could be because the settlements are so old the Norse people that arrived slowly integrated with the native people, effectively eliminating the bloodline over many generations
reply

Vikings bathed a lot more than native English, so much so that English men complained their women were being stolen away by the Scandinavian obsession with bathing and hair lol
reply

This was nice. I'd like a similar video about scandinavia as a whole, just like this one, borders, kings, etc.
(Just not specifically for the vikings)

reply

According to a museum on the topic in Iceland, the reason why Nordic settlements didn't last were the Native Americans (who attacked unsuspecting settlers.

6: 07 Yes the short-range wireless technology bluetooth is named after Harald Bluetooth since he was famous for connecting with people.
reply

Note that in 3: 50, Iceland was inhabited by the Papars before the Norse colonized it. The Papars were Irish monks who settled there, hermits.
reply

Im a blood proved direct descendent of Harald Bluetooth, although for some reason my heritage is Norwegian, so how does that work?
reply

Love your vids, please do one on East African Indians or the ones that migrated because of colonialism and the partition.
reply

My favourite part of any of your videos is when a character runs through a field of daisies. Brilliant.
reply

6: 08 Are you using a wireless Bluetooth mouse or keyboard, or earbuds right now?
Yeah, _that_ Bluetooth.
