Shout-out to my Patron Joshua for coming up with the series name Christoph: The age of colonialism started long before emperor Franz. At the time Spain, Portugal, Britain, France and the Netherlends expanded, Austria had still politicall ties to the Nethetlends, Spain und Italy. Austria was at the starting of colonialism not a national orientated country but a politically highly influencial konarchry with complex allegieances in Spain, Italy, Germany and many parts of Europe. Just looking at border maps does not do justice to the development between the 16th and 19th century during which time the Hambsburgs, leading dynasty of Austria until end of WW1 had access to colonies via ties and ruling power over what later became independent national states. Austrias national identiy only emerged after WW1 as a nation and was further distinguished from a German identity by the Nazi Anschluss and WW2.
The Austro Hungarian Navy was the 8th largest navy at the start of WW1 btw.
Hence sadly many of your analysis and interpretation does not do justice to historic facts. But thanks for the effort nevertheless

0: 29 About Navy. Because they didn't make huge economic development in Croatia, Istria, Dalmatia and Slavonia like in northern parts of country, like Slovakia, Czech, Hungary and Austria.
War moral was low becazse of tgat, together to make powerful shipyards across Croatian coast to gain overseas territories. Wien and Budapest prefer Italian wine than Dalmatian and Istrian. Zagreb, Rijeka, Split, Osijek never have train metro like Budapest and Prague. That mean something like they don't like us as their part of Monarchy. And then why we would go to war for them? And invest in Croatian infatry, vechiles and ship. That invest a lot in (war and civilian) shipyard across Croatian coast and metro like in northern parts, no doubts that ships would be good quality to won a war. No invest, no brainstorming on our and their coast.

The question at issue had never even occurred to me, but if it had I would have just thought 'Austria-Hungary was landlocked'. The video rather fudges this by showing the Adriatic coast (including Trieste) as part of Austria-Hungary, rather than part of its Balkan possessions. But even if we accept this, Austria-Hungary would have had no sea access to the world beyond the Mediterranean except through the straits of Gibraltar or, after 1870, through the Suez Canal. Since both of these were effectively under British control, it would make communication with any overseas colonies dependent on British approval.
It might make more sense to ask why the A-H Empire didn't seek colonies in North Africa, but in the 19th century this was already occupied by France or the Ottoman Turks, so it would not have been a walkover.

Well, Austro-Hungarian empire colonized Transylvania with Germans and Hungarians and treated the native Romanian population like slaves until they were eventually liberated by the Romanian army in 1918. But a lot of blood had to be spilt. The Germans decided to leave at some point after WW2 and amazingly, despite the atrocities they committed against Romanians, Hungarians were still allowed to live in Transylvania further to this day. I am amazed this happened
reply

afaik, there were also some small islands which were colonized by Austria-Hungary
but nothing to talk about
another reason was (like other people already mentioned) that Austria-Hungary only had access to the mediterranean sea, and that wasn't even that big
those, their possibility as a sea-faring nation was limited
also, before Austria-Hungary was a thing, Austria with the HRE had some colonies in South America for a short time

reply

They tried to concur Balkan, something went terribly wrong there so they no more.
But south border was not even they military a lot of Serbs Croatians Romanian ect. fought against Ottoman empire on side of Hungarian part of military. Looks like less sense to fight somewhere around the world while you literally have problem to secure your border and needless to say non of other nations wanted to fight anywhere else than to defend homeland.

Austria-Hungary was a great band, (my favorite songs of theirs are Galicia and Caporetto from the Isonzo album) but I think the band was kinda destined to break up after the lead singer Franz Ferdinand overdosed. After that it was pretty much downhill for the band, the only good album they made after his death was the Isonzo album that I mentioned before.

Transylvania was a Hungarian colony. The majority population was Romanian (>60%) but they had ZERO rights, while Transylvanian mines were exploited by Austrians and hungarians for their own benefit (Romanians got ZERO. Fits the definition of colony, right? So finally Transylvania rejoined Romania ending Hungarian colonialism.

In fact, Mexico could have become a colony of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, since around that time the French Intervention in Mexico took place and the establishment of the empire of Maximilian of Habsburg, which was of Austrian origin, luckily it did not work and the end shot, so we saved ourselves.
reply

If I'm not mistaken the Habsburg family was like a very powerful European family right weren't they on a couple thrones if not I'm pretty sure they were in a couple royal families not just the Austrian Hungarian one like I'm pretty sure they had something to do with Spain for a little while
reply

Sooo what about franz-joseph-land? In case you arent familiar with it, it's just some islands north of siberia some austrian explorers kinda tripped over and named it after their emperor. Of course no real colony but woulda been worth a mention imo: )
reply

no, their navy wasn't that good at all to deal with the British navy that will destroy the austro Hungarian naval ships, plus africa is filled with colonized land, and Abyssinia (Ethiopia) is colonized by Italy
reply

4he austro hungarian navy wasnt that bad. And colonies cost much money. Germany for instance only invested in their colonies but never got much out of it
reply

Crazy that places like Semigalia and Courland could have colonies (albeit short lived) while Austria really never had anything.
reply

And through all of this nobody decided to die at an inappropriate moment leading to no colonies. This is very hard to accept!
reply

. they were too slow for the overseas race and therefore colonized eastern and southeastern Europe, which led to WW1
reply

that _empire_ was led by austrians. magyars however had _the sauce_ deep down their souls so that's another story.
reply

The moment you realise Courland (a part of modern Latvia) had bigger colonial empire than Austria-Hungary
reply

white history matters: the eight-nation alliance helped to put down the Boxer Rebellion
laugh my head off

reply

Africa: You could always have a colony here?
Franz Ferdinand: I know I won't be leaving here with you
