Why did Romania join the axis? Documentary Szabolcs: Btw, in 1940 the Hungarians were ready to attack them, with a much weaker army. However, they were so confident they were right that the Romanians would probably have suffered a humiliating defeat. (I learned not long ago that the Mongolian considered their hardest war the Hungarian campaign in 1241-42: their warriors who died there had a separate cemetery back in the heartland of their empire. I am certain the Hungarians would have fought with the same spirit against their archenemy: the Romanian state. Again, I want to reiterate: we have all rsspect for every Romanian, in general, but their state occupies lands that simply do not belong to it. I even understand their personal attachment they feel to Transsylvania, which their state acquired 100 years ago, but, one day, they will have to give it back to its rightful owner)

I have all respect for Romanian people, in general, just like everyone else. The Romanian state, however, is a thieving, cowardly state: the small fish had a huge mouth in 1918. They declared war on Austria-Hungary just 1 day before the former's surrender, grew big on the fat of the Bulgarians and Hungarians, annexed what they could, and then they were surprised all their neighbors could hardly wait for a chance to put them right. Look at what they are doing now: they occupy almost exclusively Hungarian-populated territories, but they are unwillinng to give them autonomy. They should be expelled from the EU instantly. That country should properly called 'Romania and Transsylvania temporarily unified territories'.

This interestingly fails to mention that Romania did not 'expand' or 'knap' territory from collapsing empires after WWI. Those territories were historical Romanian provinces since forever, inhabited by an overwhelming majority of Romanians since forever. The words you should have used is 'united itself with its stolen territory' The fact that they were under occupation of criminal empires did not make them less Romanian. That detail alone puts Romania's decisions in WWII in a totally different light.

Great video. There are some inacuracies, the way I see it. The Viena Award wasn't previously agreed by Romania (offered up this land, Germany imposed it as previous negociations at Turnu Severin failed. And former King Carol II crossed Switzerland but fled to Spain, were he was forced to stay until fleeing to Portugal. And he didn't take national reserve gold, but a lot of money and a valuable stamp collection. As for Bulgaria's, the talks started earlier, not on September 7th 1940.

They could have survived had they turned to the USSR. However, Romania wasn't a democracy. In capitalism it's the elites that decide and the elites never decide to side with socialists.
So it's the other way around, Romania didn't survive because it was ruled by the ideological antithesis of communism and preferred to submit to fascism than to see a socialist revolution.
So you got it all wrong once again. On purpose, of course.

reply

Man imagine someone put you into a situation where you have to play a game of survival with the Nazis. You are basically forced to give them what they want and help them to survive. Would you hvae the willpower to reject them and lead your country into war and devastation? What a shitty situation a lot of these countries were put in and you can't really condemn romania for joining the AXIS.
reply

So romania was stuck in a position where they could die by either the axis or the soviet
So they were forced to join a side and they pick the axis
Everytime i read about romanian history i just feel bad for them they get bullied by everyone

Bessarabia had large German settlements. Part of the agreement was to resettle all of the ethnic Germans back into Germany when Bessarabia was given to Stalin. Many of those Germans eventually emigrated to the US after the war.

I really want to write a research paper for school about Romania's role in ww2 or about Romania fascism, I'm just having trouble finding primary sources. Does anyone know where I can find reliable primary sources? Thank you!

Should have mentioned how Romanians lines were the ones that were broken that led to encirclement of General Paulis Sixt Army at the Battle of Stalingrad. Germans so unlucky with their Allies, all of them good for nothing!
reply

I disagree with the conclusion at the end of the video. They did have similar ideology. The Romanians were happy to commit genocide along with the Nazi. The Romanian government killed 400, 000 Romanian jews during the war.

Good God. Isle of Man, a self- governing British Crown dependency, enters the war on Germanys side. No, my mistake. Someone has used a ridiculous colour scheme for text and background on the thumbnail.

I tip my hat off to the brave Romanian and Hungarian fighters who should actually be paired up with Germany in all Axis representations instead of Japan and Italy.
reply

At this rate Romania wouldve been split in two. What a terrible idea! Only an idiot would want to split a country in two!
Enter Treaty of Versailles.

0: 35 as far as i know bukovina wasn't allowed under the molotov-ribbentrop pact. the occupation of that area by the soviets was a violation of the pact
reply

Actually, the M-R Pact did not assign Bucovina to the USSR, but they invaded it. This was a cause of tension between the Reich and the Union for months.
reply

Hungary and Romania bring on the same team are like the time North Korea and the United States fought together against Somali pirates
reply

0: 58 - This is, ahem, stage right.
Usually such attention to (historical, I guess is the difference) detail that this one stuck out.

reply

Give it back! Give Transylvania back to Hungary! It was part of the Hungarian Kingdom for 800 years! Since 1920 is part of Rumenia! Sadly
reply

Those conquered territories were already belonging to romania in the past, so i guess it should be named recovered territories
