Why Didn\'t Sweden Join World War 2? Documentary Ulf: To correct a small mistake. There were no German troops traveling on the Swedish rail roads to invade Norway, but after that the occupation of Norway was a fact Sweden agreed to let German troops on leave from Norway to travel on rail through Sweden, and then in 1941 there was the issue of letting Germany move troops from Norway to Finland, who was fighting on the side of Germany against the Soviet Union. Being Swedish I cannot say that I am proud of what Sweden did during these horrible years but at least we did not actively support the German invasion of Norway, though to some extent we did support the occupation of Norway.

Another one sided history presentation, I know more about the subject that you do. Sweden gave the Germans in WW2 iron ore, steel, rifles, ammo, artillery pieces, machine guns, etc. Thousands of Swedes joined the German Army. Germany was supported by Sweden very heavily form 1939 to late 1943. In late 1943 they did try to build an exit by give some info to the Brits. By 1945 they converted to helping the Brits. Please do a better job in your videos.

Something often ignored on why sweden did much less for Norway than they did for Finalnd. Finland had already got a huge part of swedens ammunition stockpile. Sweden simply had not much left to do anything with when it came to Norway.
And for extra fun, if Germany had not invaded Norway when they did, then England would have invaded Sweden. Just to destroy the iron mines (since germany got a lot of its ore from sweden, england did not.

Germany invaded Norway by sea and air. The Norwegian army capitulated by June 10th. Sweden allowed German troops to transit by train after June 18th. Sweden did not allow and invasion through it. Also notable is that Norway took 62 days before capitulation which is the longest of any country conquered by Nazi Germany.

We also sold a lot of things like ball bearings to the allies, and a a steep discount compared to what Germany paid for them. Concessions were just a lot more favourable than war and we had the option to stay out of it. I don't like us not resisting the Germans but I'd probably do the same thing.

In Norway, a lot of people were unhappy that the Swedes didn't help out. Some considered them cowards for letting German troops pass through. Swedes are our brother people, but we are somewhat bitter that they didn't stand up to the Germans.

It wasn't Sweden' choice not to join the war, it was the Germans who decided not to invade. Sweden's location wasn't as interested as Norway's, the latter being invaded. Sweden did have some worries about their big red neighbor in the east

Lets just be honest, they didnt want to go against the Nazis. So while all around them people were giving their lives for freedom they sat back and enjoyed life. They knew that what ever side won they would come out of it OK.

Maybe the question should be put the other way: why SHOULD Sweden have joined the war?
And what other country that was not invaded joined the war?
I guess Britain, France and Italy would be the only ones. Right?

My maternal grandpap helped Jews crossing from Denmark over to Sweden, and he also got his military training over in Sweden and was about to be deployed in a liberation attempt for Denmark and then the war ended.

The Danes and especially the Norwegians rememember this as the great betrayel.
I'm Norwegian myself, and I have many colleges from both Denmark and Sweden, and most swedes today feel certain shame over it.

I remember there being 2 photos, taken some weeks apart in the same studio. One being of an German officer, and one being of a American bomber pilot. Just one of those random things you learn sometimes xD

Story is German occupation officials in Denmark tipped off the Jewish community there that they'd be soon rounded up, but fishing boats to Sweden would leave sooner, be on those boats.

In non combat roles say what? Swedish volunteers who fought against the Soviet with the Finns where numerous. Iirc per capita it was the biggest volunteer force during the whole war.

The espionage from Sweden was one thing that led to the news of the holocaust being sent and spread to Britain and its allies so how neutral were we really behind the curtains xD.
reply

simply cuz they were pussies and didnt want to help finland, thats why finns call all swedish people gay and thats a fact, if you are not from sweden or finland you cant argue this.

There are rumors that they allowed closed cattle train cars from Norway to travel through the country filled with jews. Roumors I say, I've never seen a document which states so.

Lets be real here, if Germany didnt attack the USSR and go into an alliance with Japan, they could have ended the war way earlier. The land of both France and GB would be enough.

In my grandmother's old house where she lived, nearby is a memorial rune when the Norwegian king fled the German attack in Nybergsund, Norway. Just to tell i am Swe/Nor.
