One thing many wouldn't have expected in the Cold War was that the USSR asked to join Nato. Which seems a bit mad and so obviously it raised the question: why? To find out watch this short and simple animated documentary

USSR had whole nations forcely incorporated into its teritory. It also had puppet regimes installed in several other neighbors Poland, Romania etc. There were constant threats towards the western nations as well. So, what NATO membership are we talking about?
The whole point of NATO, besides the common defence policies are having normal stable relations with your neighbors and respecting others sovereignity. (Turkey does not exactly fit into that category today and is very clear this was far far worse with USSR back then)

reply

this just tells you, that the west was the aggressor seeking control and domination all the time,
because URSS was ready to join nato in the case that they accepted, that would mean that URSS would had not been able to attack anyone on the aliance and they were ok with that.
while NATO accepting URSS would had made them pointless, but thats because they would had achieved the supposed objective of the aliance, protect europe from URSS, if they rejected them is because the alliance wasn't just for proteccion.

reply

so humorous. They gave EG back then allowed the other captured formerly-independent nations to become vassal states in the Soviet Union.
I don't think that any of thjs really matters. What matters is who exactly gets the fruits of war. The implication of central control is that the government is free to decide this on whatever basis it chooses.

reply

Boris Yeltsin also offered to Join NATO but they didnt accept, because they want confrontation to creat imaginary enemy to distract people from the reality that they are in while they steal from them and to keep military industrial complexes alive.
reply

Now we take the Cold War as something granted and unavoidabled, but the separation between East and west wasn't the only way and the USSR joining NATO and working with the USA instead of against could happen as a certain option.
reply

Theoretically speaking, NATO should have just said well discuss this among ourselves, then get back to you only theyd never give the USSR an answer. Basically just do what the Chinese emperor did in the first opium war
reply

Only when the citizens suffer bitter hunger and freeze will the sleeping sheep (possibly) wake up and understand what corrupt, fascist criminals politicians have done to their country
reply

Yeah, but how about when the Union collapsed in 91? I believe that it was Yeltsin who applied again in the mid 90s, or Putin in the early 2000s. Of course they got rejected again
reply

Why Did the USSR Ask to Join NATO?
To prove to the whole world that NATO is not a defensive alliance, but a bunch of hypocritical warmongers.

reply

so, what do we learn from this? nationalism is bad. Why do we still have nationalism? because people are too lazy to educate themselves
reply

The Military Industrail Complex wouldn't have any way to scare up money if they didn't have a big bad guy. They would never say yes.
reply

USSR asked to join NATO also Putin asked to join NATO. NATO said NO. I hope it's clear now who wishes for war and who needs war.
reply

NATO: No Dictatorship Allow.
Trump: My Country is done of NATO.
NATO: Please don't leave, We need America.

reply

I wish they did join Nato. We probably wouldn't have war in Yugoslavia and so many other wars here in Europe. >.
reply

Putin only would like to steal western military secrets and weaknesses of defense, and rise up destructions.
reply

They declined because if the USSR joined, NATO wouldn't have a scapegoat to plaster all their problems to.
