Well, I'd rather France be in NATO, but it doesn't make any difference if they're in or out. Either way they have never been able to defend their country. To me their 'independence' objections is just another way to say that when things get tough or they chicken out they want the unabridged right to surrender without consideration of others keeping them in the fight on their home soil. They still want others to fight again in France. Born cowards.

France didn't want to do the economic costs of NATO's provisions, because the location of France, causes the nation to have the benefits of NATO without the costs, the adherence to NATO's rules, and can be free to act in their own best interests in the Middle Eastern nation's activities. I've actually work with French military while in service. Their tactics are. different. Not like crazy, stand on your head to shot, different, but still. At one instance we got attacked and everyone open fire. They didn't set anyone to guard the rear. Nothing happen. We didn't get flanked but if the enemy had planned better, we could have.

Have to love the leadership of a country that had to be bailed out twice in World Wars, bailing out of the alliance because they couldn't assume a leadership position in the alliance. France has always been strictly for France, and I'm guessing most of the other nations in NATO at that time didn't miss them at all.
