Why did the Middle East's version of NATO Fail?

METO (The Middle Eastern Treaty Organisation) was an alliance of countries along the USSR's southern border dedicated to fighting any Soviet interference in the region. Despite the threat still existing in 1979 and the Cold War showing no signs of slowing down why did it dissolve? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary. Beachdude67: Historically, trying to get the Middle East to unify over anything is a mess. Egypt and Syria couldn't even get their act together in a war against Israel. Trying to unite against the Soviet Union was a futile gesture and it was known by everyone that if the USSR were to invade the Middle East the West would get involved and spark WW3. METO and later CENTO were not only meaningless but unnecessary.

I can picture it now, NATO is formed and the countries of the Middle East are like
That treaty is dope, I totally want that for myself
So they schedule a meeting, all desperately wanting to form their own NATO-like alliance and start fighting about the name.
Tensions are high, no one can think of something fitting. The Iranian representative says:
We obviously need a decent name, and one that shows our intent of having our own version of NATO. I want this alliance to work.
Iraqi representative who had fallen asleep during the naming debate wakes up as the Pakistani rep nudges him; boisterously saying:
METOO!
Everyone smiles as they realize that they've found their name. Then the British rep who was smoking hookah in the back and wearing a fake beard over their mustache leaps up, laughing like a super villain and says
It's too late to kick me out of the Alliance now, and I'm taking all your oil!
And then steals am armful of paintings on his way out.

I want to make a hypothesis before starting to watch. Why? Because of meddling superpowers, USA and USSR, most obviously.
Side note: the list of all patreons in the description of the video (or read at the end of it) is just annoying AF, on top of utterly and incredibly useless and irrelevant. There are ways less disruptive for the audience to thank them. If they are patroning in order to obtain recognition, it's seriously messed up anyway. Nobody cares about their names or pseudos.

It wouldn't even make sense back then or even expect METO/CETO to exists or have longevity because it would reinforce the existence of Western powers (hence why UK was odd and no one likes Israel, not so much opposing communism. In hindsight it's not surprising that western influence ended up destabilizing the region to what it is today, causing the Arab Spring, etc. if the treaty was more genuine in Arab solidarity, expanding to Afghanistian maybe

This treaty was successor to treaty of Saadabad 1937(name of a palace in tehran) in which Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and turkey made an anti aggression alliance with blessing of England, which was an anti Bolshevik pact to prevent Soviets from coming south and invading them. It was signed in 1937, came to effect in 1938 and lasted 5 years in 1943 it was extended for another 5 years and after that it was dead.

it mostly failed due to public pressure due to britian and turkey colonial past in the region, in jordan most of my family and relatives protested the move and pressured the government to decline the british pressures with was very difficult because jordan was still dependent on the british financial support, finally the US intervened and supported the public choice to maintain stability in Jordan.

Turkey: We should form a middle-eastern alliance to keep foreign powers from meddling in our affairs.
Egypt: Agreed, we are better together.
Iraq: Strength in unity.
Syria: No more imperialism.
Britain: How do you do, fellow Arabs?
Egypt: Forget this nonsense.
Syria: Yeah, alliances are overrated.
Turkey: I hate you, Britain. I really, really hate you.

There is more to this. Baghdad Pact was a threat to the West. The US funded the COUP to get rid of Faisal II, later Iskander Mirza of Pakistan was exiled. Adnan Menderes of Turkey was hanged on false charges. then Zahir Shah of Afghanistan and The Shah of Iran. read From Plassey to Pakistan by Humayun Mirza

You get a lot of these the EU / NATO but elsewhere, while forgetting those were forged after two apocalyptic wars in the span of 30 years and the real possibility of a world ending one happening soon. Those were pretty vital in overcoming, you know, a collective history of mutual antagonism
reply

Everything I know about the UK's foreign policy means that joining METO was probably the British strategy to ensure the Arab world didn't unite. It's an old joke that the reason the UK joined the EU was to weaken it from the inside after failing to harm it from the outside.

Will we see the emergence of EATO (East Asian treaty organization) to keep the Chinese in check? Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand, Singapore the UK and the US all have converging interests in this regard and a history of shared political values
reply

. I'm going to presume that one of the primary reasons why it failed was Religion. We'll see if I'm right in a bit.
Edit: I was incorrect. Seems religion was a minor, if non-existent reason. Also, the USA doing the smart thing? 'Ery noice.

reply

When you introduced METO, methought, Huh? Don't you mean CENTO? I'm glad I watched and learned that the organization that I knew for many years as CENTO was, for its first few years, known as METO (which was a much better name.
reply

The US declined because it didn't want it to be seen as an expansion of American power.
Since when did the US care about what other nations think about its activities in the middle east?

reply

Lol a middle eastern alliance pact yeah funny one. they all had israel as the #1 enemy for awhile but nowdays they all have diff enemies and so many different ideologies its crazy.

Britain is like that popular, extremely extroverted dude who enters whatever social gathering even when it's clearly non intended for him, making it awkward for everyone
reply

NATO works because all the member states are democratic. It's hard to hold an alliance together with a bunch of despots, monarchs, dictators, and unstable governments.
reply

Love watching your videos. You should do a video on why were Romania and Albania were independent of complete Soviet influence and free from Soviet occupation.
reply

Hey, let's form an alliance.
Okay!
Cool!
Hey, so can my allies please come help me with a thing?
No!
Well, why bother then?

reply

This is my first time hearing about this somewhat short-lived alliance (24 years is actually a lot longer than I would have expected. Thanks, History Matters!
