Why wasn't there a Scramble for Australia?

Why wasn't there a Scramble for Australia?

When Europeans came across a large landmass that look easy to conquer, they generally fought amongst themselves for it. Yet unlike the Americas and Africa, there was no attempt at any other European country except for Britain to take the continent-sized Australia. So why not? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary. Ekes: Both the Dutch and the Portuguese were just around the corner on the island of Timor, but the Australian coast on the North of the continent didn't look very inviting, the region is still very scarcely populated until today. So they concentrated on their spice business with the tropical island North of Australia and never explored the much more inviting Southern and Southeastern coast.

Also, as far as replanting goes If you plant softwood evergreen trees in the tropics, they don't develop tight ring patterns because the temperature and moisture never changes enough.
This makes them unsuitable for masts.
There are a number of contemporary observations regarding this in the Pacific, notably from Cook, in the evaluations of materials for retrofitting and re supply in a long range sense.

Dumb question, because any animal you see hasbto be killed on sight, preferably with enpugh distance between you - otherwise you might risk dying. Seriously if I lived in Florida or Australia I'd demand to be allowed to have at least a flameflower in any place at any time - otherwise I'd be knocking on every politicans door until they would throw me into prison for harassment.

I don't think besides Britain and Dutch anyone was into Aus (France maybe but didn't settle.
Heck it's not impossible for Britain to take, especially compared to Africa which was too big for just one Empire eh? :) Heck South America was roughly spilt by Spain and Portugal.
So it wasn't big enough that it had to be spilt up is my argument.

The natural environment in Australia is so astoundingly hostile to human life almost everywhere that it's kind of a miracle that even the British persisted in colonizing the place. It wouldn't have been weird if they just said screw it, bye and left the place to the Aborigines.
reply

I've always heard about the convicts meme regarding Australia, but I hadn't considered that it also made colonizing the place less risky (since if they were lost, the govt wouldn't care.
Thanks for another great video.

Portugal did find Australia when they we exploring and colonizing stuff in the Spice Islands but since their resources we arlready spread too thing and with Australia not having anything of value, they ignored it
reply

In Australia, events followed the Age of Discovery's usual pattern. The Portuguese discovered it. The Spanish conquered it. The Dutch named it New Holland. The French ignored it. And the British took it.
reply

Fun fact, South America at the height of European colonization was and I m pretty sure is the only continent to be fully colonized by Europe, meaning no native people had an actual country in the region
reply

My answer before watching:
Because their was nothing really there except a lot of things trying to kill you which Europeans already had enough of back in Europe in the form of their neighbours.

reply

Not you. Never you as Britain stares at France, a millennia of bad-will filling his heart with murder frenzy.
truly, they are our cloest rivals and I would miss them terribly if they were gone.

reply

Moral of the story: if that scramble for Australia happened we probably wouldn't have any aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi and we would never be left wondering if an Australian meant today or to die
reply

Great roads. Great beaches. Great quality of life. Huge natural resources. Lowest national debt per capita in the OECD and G20. Highest productivity, and highest GDP per capita in the world.
reply

Why there was no scramble for New Zealand?
Let me guess no one else wanted it except for England and the English quickly built castles everywhere so France couldn't make a claim.

Am I the only one waiting for him to say 'Boogly Woogly' during the Specials Thanks section at the end of each episode? The name is strangely satisfying and funny at the same time.
reply

It s not worth it (no offense Australians, I mean in terms of resources it s just not worth traveling to literally the other end of the planet and wasting a load of money for.
reply

i'd like to think that the reason it never happened is that other powers landed on australia, saw the wild life, then decided to go home and never speak of this place again
reply

Flashback to it's 1783, and the Americans have left. The Empire, led by King George III, Famous for being crazy, now had to find a new place for a Penal colony. :D
reply

Britain be like you give us your desirables, and we give you our undesirables? deal? deal! shakes own hands
everyone else: surprised-pikachu-face

reply

Why didn't the Austronesians settle into Australia? If the reason is that they never discovered it (before the Europeans) then why was that the case?
