After World War 2 Italy was the only major loser to avoid long-term occupation. So why? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary. In the early 20th century, Britain and Japan were the best of friends. They hated their neighbours, loved boats and wanted to take other peoples' countries. Despite this common ground, their alliance dissolved after twenty years and another couple of decades later, the two were at war. So why? Why did Britain and Japan's alliance fail? Edward: Loved the U. S. Soldier armed with a flamethrower at 3: 02. The U. S. -Japan fighting in the Pacific was to the death, and flamethrowers were a valuable weapon in the hands of people like Medal of Honor recipient and Marine Hershel Woody Williams, who only recently passed away at age 98. It takes a special person to go into battle with a tank full of flammable liquids on your back.

Interesting! So, in an American Primary Education class, titled 'Naval Science, ' we were taught about the Allied invasion of Italy and American, British and French perspectives and arguments for the post-War administration of Western Europe. (As filtered through the perspective of a Lieutenant-Commander from the 80s/90s/Tailhook days) The explanation we were given for American leniency towards the new Italian state was that A: There would be popular sovereignty-style referendum to settle the fate of the monarchy. (Glory for Garibaldi) B: Italy wasn't in an economic position to do anything except hurt itself further, at this point.
In contrast, the instruction presented Britain's intentions as 'practical in theory, impossible in reality. ' Britain's obligations after the war were already going to be difficult to meet after the loss of life and damage to the British economy. Add to that America's intention to use the Post-War Reconstruction to force the issue of de-colonialization. In contrast to its view of Britain, some elements in the American military directly blamed French belligerence in the Ruhr for the breakdown in relations in the Inter-War. They'd also been skeptical of de Gaulle's leadership, who they begrudgingly acknowledged as the leader of the French Resistance, but not necessarily a legitimate leader of the French nation, and therefore not in a position to decide it's Post-War trajectory.

Letting the Italians run Italy again made sense. Even the United States, deep-pocketed as it was, didn't have the resources to send over layers and layers of people to run a new government and infrastructure. Likewise with Germany. General Eisenhower received criticism for hiring former, um. followers of the toothbrush-mustached German man. Eisenhower defended his decision, pointing out, They're the ones who best know how things run around here. During the American occupation of Iraq in 2003, all former Baath Party members were excluded from participating in government work, which made that occupation more difficult to manage.

What really annoys me about this is that while the allies did this for the Italians, when the Romanians did the same thing with their king Micheal the allies just bent over and let the Soviets take complete control of Romania, despite a legitimate and much better government taking over from the fascists. I m glad we allowed Italy to survive relatively unharmed but leaving Romania out to be raped and pillaged by the Soviets despite their coup against fascism was horrid.

Fun fact, when Italy was disarmed, some or their Air Force planes were given to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM, a chivalric order from the Crusades that governed the islands of Malta, Camino and Gozo from the 1500s until the French kicked them out in the 1790s. After a while, the SMOM relocated to Rome in the 1800s and remained there. The SMOM still works closely with the Italian Armed Forces today.

remember that Two Frogs story? About, unsurprisingly, two frogs stuck in a bowl of milk? Well, Germany and Japan is that frog that kept trying to get out which basically just made their death more slow and painful.
And Italy is that frog that allied itself with the milk, backstabbed the first frog and jumped out of the bowl by stepping of the first frog's corpse.

To be honest, they were mostly useless during the war and had to be bailed out by the Nazis several times, so they kinda worked in the allies' favor at times, diverting resources to them. I understand the leniency, although I don't agree with people like Eberhard Von Mackensen and the such not getting hanged for their role in the Adreatine massacre.

Isn't it funny that the main 3 belligerent nations of the Axis, minus East Germany, turned out pretty ok after the war ended? Romania turned communist, so did Bulgaria, Hungary and Yugoslavia, while Germany, Italy and Japan managed to integrate themselves into the Western world quite easily.
Not even Poland and Czechoslovakia were spared.

given how so much less difficult it was to beat italy vs germany it is kind of funny the british wanted harsher demilitirzation terms, the italians barely had a functional army before ww2, almost immediately it broke down, their navy was kind of useless, and then they pushed for peace almost immediately after loosing sicily

The same reason for Thailand not being punished--the US over-ruled objections from France and UK about the post-war architecture. US and Soviet victory was a major game-changer in international politics--which would become very apparent during the Suez Crisis and the Algerian independence movement.

A few ideas:
Why did Ethiopia become Christian?
How did the Netherlands become a global power?
What was China s roll in WW2?
Why was Thailand not colonized?
How did Liberia stay free?
How did the Ottoman Empire treat its Christian population?
Love the vids

Yeah, and Spain was definitely occupied and split. And so was Portugal.
I think, overall involvement of countries in the ww2 and the resolution of that would make for a great video.
But definitely it wasn't only Italy that got away.
Oh my Austria!

The New Mussolini sound just makes this video more interesting
Honestly Italy is like that villain that no matter what they do no one finds them evil their evil days are gone with the Roman empire
Italy can't be called in the big boys villain club anymore

reply

Yeah, the Italians remained loyal to the Germans right to the bitter end, that is until they knew Germany were going to lose so they decided to turncoat on the Germans. The Italians were Germany's Achilles heel. I mean look at the Muppet you had leading you.

Thank you for not saying out loud the Fez-wearing Italian man's name, otherwise this video would have probably been demonetized and / or locked in Italy. Now I can enjoy it with this little comedical bit as well, that just makes the video even funnier: )
reply

Italy wasn't occupied because there was already a government sympathetic to the Allies that was de facto ruling the country while the Fez wearing Italian man was up in the North defying the De Facto rule of the government of Victor Emmanuel

Italian Somaliland was retained by Italy under UN Mandate, so Italy didn t lose all of its overseas empire (until 1960, when Italian Somaliland joined with British Somaliland to become independent Somalia. Really good video otherwise.

Mussolini was also a little at odds with the Nazi's brand of fascism, though he agreed with the core tenets he was never really onboard with the notion of racial superiority, as that would essentially mean ostracizing half his countrymen.
