Ten Minute History - The Fall of Rome Short Documentary Rome became incredibly wealthy and powerful, then lazy and corrupt, then gone. In the early days many of the government workers worked for free (or had their slaves work there and not charge the government) It was considered the duty of the citizen to donate their time. (I'm sure there was no ulterior motive to get certain positions in the government) Rome was very cheap to run in the early days. By the time of Diocletian it was being buried in bureaucracy (he added layer upon layer himself)

To all history wizards: During II Punic War (180 B. C) Where did the Carthaginian war leader Hannibal get his famous Elephants from that he went over the Alp's with to the gates of Rome? African elephant is UNBROKEN, cant ride and rarely command. From India trough Persia? Around Africa with Mediterranean vessels that sank in relatively calm waters on smallest storm? Plot holes. And I don't even start with the appearance of Holy German-Roman empire midst of post Migration Period (300-400 A. D) chaos while Black Death is killing people like Reaper reaping weed on a field.

Honestly their country shape is genius. One main problem of countries is size leading to:
- It is hard to defend borders as borders quickly become too huge
- It is uneasy to move army inside the country when it gets huge
They did solve both problems by taking a proper shape: water inside, land outside, so they can:
1. Travel their army on ships (though Im not sure if they really taken advance of this prop)
2. Border defense should be relatively easier since half of it is water

I really like all of these videos! Three years might be too long to say this, but a similar video about the eventual dissolution of the Eastern Roman Empire could be interesting. There's a video about the actual fall of Constantinople, but learning how the eastern half went from fine, really to seemingly little more than Constantinople, and surrounded by Ottomans, since today there is NO Roman Empire left, could be a fun tale.

In the contrary, Majorian managed to restore the entire Western Roman Empire (except for Vandal Africa) through either conquest or subjugation before his death. He revived the faltering empire but was promptly murdered by his closest friend Ricimer thus the empire ceased to exist just 15 years on the dot, after the death of Majorian

I love the history. Its like watching Stephen Sticker in 1980 Airplaneanswering Lloyd Bridges; start at the beginning answer: first the earth was formed and then it cooled, then the dinosaurs came, and they died and became oil, and then the Arabs came, and they drove Mercedes Benzes

Loss of demographics. Rome simply didnt produce enough ethnic Romans(Julian Claudians) to sustain the army or empire. Thus needing disloyal barbarians for support. Its a lesson to the current west. If your people choose to not re populate then you too will fall.

This depresses me because after the fall of Rome there came the big nothing: docile simple-minded religious peasants getting not much done for several hundred years until enlightenment. Rome already had toilets, ice cream and high education for crying out loud.

And the people thought everything was fine, even though the barbarians were claiming more and more territory.
In modern times, imagine a state such as Texas or California declaring that its citizens would no longer have to pay the IRS.

Wow I knew western Rome had it rough near the end but I didnt know it was stepping on its own feet while being stabbed from every conceivable direction from the outside, while also actively and frequently stabbing itself

I was listening (not watching) this when I heard the year 404 bit. Stopped everything, went back, and watched to see if you had included a gag on that number. You did not disappoint, sir.

Watching this makes me want to root somewhat for Mussolini, but I do very much recognize that he killed a lot of people which is obviously abhorrent & I condemn

I don't know why anyone would have wanted to be Emporer of Rome, especially in the late days of the empire. The life expectancy was lower than a house fly.

Rome! We are going to conquer almost everyone we ever meet, Rome! Its the immigrants and foreigners that made us weak. Foreigners! Yes, like we had a choice!

The story of how Attila ALMOST sacked the city of Rome is a truly weird and great one, as well. Not enough time for it in 10 minutes, what with all else.

I don't particularly like how Aetius is portrayed here as somewhat incompetent and utterly opportunistic. He was one of the great heroes of late antiquity.

Strange that Vandalism would be really offensive if there were any people who still thought of themselves as Vandals still around today

I really enjoy your peculiar style of humour, it truly brings something fresh to the video without distracting from the content. Props to you!

This was back when Istanbul was called Constantinople. I'm not sure why Constantinople got the works. It's nobody's business but the turks.
