Did the gulags really disappear in the 1950s? As a kid in the 1960s in Australia, I was dimly aware of the gulags, I thought they existed in a scaled down form, or did I read too many Ian Fleming novels?

When I was in high school we had to read a book about European history and I borrowed The Gulag Archipelago from my grandpa. I wish I hadnt. What a nightmarish book.
