Ten Minute History - Charlemagne and the Carolingian Empire Short Documentary Marcus: Looking at the map of the corolingian empire when it started looked a lot like the 6 founding members of the EEC later EU.
The west franconia, lotheringia and east franconia empires, where west franconia turned in to france, east franconia in to germany and lotheringia in Netherlands belgium luxemburg switserland and italy. with the exeption of switserland these are the founding members of the EEC.

There was a battle Odo fought before Tours where Odo claimed to slay a million men by hand.
While heavily exaggerated, the Battle of Toulouse was still very important. Basically, Odo attacked sieging Umayyad forces with a small cavalry force, got repulsed, ran away.
. and returned with a full host of knights in a night ambush. He gravely wounded one of the generals (which would eventually kill him) and set the stage for the Battle of Tours (which was Charles's job to finish, which he did.

So some dinasties from the barbarian tribes warred between them, one of those barbarian chieftains expanded and acquired more and more land, and somehow down the line suddenly he wanted to be considered with the same title and stature as Augustus! Give me a break.
No wonder why a millennia later the descendants of those people wanted the real Roman Empire to be called Bizantine.

Charles Martel did not drive the Saracens out of Gaul by himself. My hypothesis is that he convinced them to leave their interests in the area to him. Charlemagne used a letter from the pope to convince the illiterate Teutoburgs that he had a holy writ from the Vatican to depose his rivals in the nobility. The HRE had to ban reading to reduce challenges to its legitimacy.

He killed 4000 prisoners, forced people to convert of die, had 10 wives and concubines, forbade his daughters to marry, but overlooked their fornication and wild behavior, and you claim he deserved the title of Great. Sounds like the Christian ISIS. Many of your videos are awesome and fair, but you have this guy way too much praise IMO.

Louis didn't divide his empire into France and HRE. It was divided into East, Middle, and West Francia with the title of Emperor going to his eldest son in Middle Francia. The East would eventually evolve into France while the West would conquer the Middle and eventually involve into the HRE (way more complicated than this.

This charlamane guy sounds brilliant. Can we get somebody like him again? Yeah yeah democracy and stuff but come on you've seen how that's going recently. Besides if my many years of pretending to be a historian because I watched some videos have taught me anything its that you want your ruler to be called the great

One of the top jobs for the Missi Dominici? Make sure every city visited by Charlemagne had a defined quota of herbs and spices. While most people subsided with bland bread, Charlemagne demanded better food, which is about the most French thing ever.

Fun fact, Charlamagne wanted to marry The Byzantine empress Irene to reunite the Roman Empire, and Irene actually was fond of this idea, but obviously others in Byzantine court were quite outraged by that idea.

So western Europe at this point was a bunch of guys rocking back and forth pretending they're still in the Roman Empire, not able to cope with the guilt of killing the Roman Empire

Editorial Note: The slide at 1: 22 has, the Umayyads were there to conquer OF loot. As you realize, it should be, the Umayyads were there to conquer OR loot. Great video.

But if a city is 1) important to administration and 2) religious reform, as well as 3) being the king's favourite residence. doesn't that by definition make it the capital?

Okay, so I just learned this a few days ago. Apparently I have an ancestor that was a descendant of Emperor Charlemagne. So technically Emperor Charlemagne is in my family.

It was seen as the duty of rulers to oversee the salvation of their subjects' souls.
Wow, really? That goes against almost everything we've been taught in school.

I don't literally laugh out loud very often, but when I saw Pippin III standing with Pippin Took (from The Lord of the Rings) I totally cracked up. Well done.
