Ten Minute History - The Dutch Revolt Short Documentary Gloriaimperial1: The Dutch developed the Calvinist religion as an excuse for independence. That might be good at first. But they were wrong. The enemy was not Spain, it was England. The Dutch had to have made a pact with Spain, as Protestant Germany did within the German empire: We have another religion, but we continue in the Spanish empire, as allies, claiming our territory in the world. When Spain left the Netherlands in 1714, the Dutch were left alone against the real enemy, which was England. That is why the Dutch have not developed a legacy in the world, or very little. The Spanish, the Portuguese and the British did have an expansion. Holland chose to be rich. Spain made a romanization in America.

Technically the Netherlands was a republic but Willem of Oranje's descendants eventually became a kind of president-for-life.
So it's not all that different from the Holy Roman Empire (there were a bit more people in the Netherlands who could vote for their leader, but still only a minuscule part of the population)

To me VOC brings bad memories to me and especially my ancestors: slavery and conquering and murdering the native Indians on the now called Dutch islands and Suriname.
A topic nobody mentions. Maybe you could honor these people, who were murdered or made slaves, by mentioning them. Thank you.

I know I pronounced Ghent incorrectly. I was too lazy to change it. I do have a question to ask you all with respect to pronunciation. Should I from now only use 'native' pronunciations (Willem, Francois, Maurits) or use English only (William, Francis, Maurice?

The first appearance of James Bissonette as the (at that point only) top-tier patron.
And yes, it appears it was pronounced correctly the first time. (We should all be so lucky)

I love all the little references that get so seamlessly crowbarred into these videos.

I just learned that William of Orange is my 12th great-grandfather and needed to brush up on what I knew about him. This was a fun little refresher, great video!

I found the origin of James Byzanet, this is like stumbling over the first high school game of Michael Jordan or an early concert of the Beatles!

Here is a typical contemporary expression showing the sort of appeal it (Calvinism) had to the 'educated and merchant classes: 'Enrichez Vous! '

The Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium managed to become independent from Spain, but Catalonia and the Basque Country have not.

They where upset about the tenth penny? Well i don't think the merchant guild (class) would like the 20th penny we have today.
