So many Scots took part in the war as to give them experience of contemporary military technology and tactics, as to make Scottish forces indispensable during the 'Civil Wars War of the Three Kingdoms in Britain and Ireland 1638-52.
The weirdest and most cynical policy was that of France and Cardinal Richelieu, who paid the Protestant Swedes to attack Catholic Austria!
When he was dying, his Father Confessor asked him, Do you have any regrets? ' Richelieu pompously replied, My Enemies were the enemies of France! '
To which, the Pope replied, ', Well! If God Exists, then Cardinal Richelieu will have a lot to answer for!
But, if God does not exist, then Cardinal Richelieu will have done very well for himself! '

The English and Scottish involvement was due to the Prince of the Palatinate marrying Charles I of England's sister, Elizabeth and both being invite to become Queen and King of Bohemia by the Bohemian Protestants. But they were obliged to flee by the successes of the Austrian Catholics. Whereupon they fled to neutral, Protestant Hanover. As their daughter married the heir to the throne, the Guelph's of Hanover became the closest Protestant heirs to the English throne and we're chose after the death of queen Anne in 1715.
Fun Fact: both George I and George II of Great Britain died of Heart Attacks as a result of relieving themselves! Rather embarrassing, what?

I've read some accounts of the sufferings of the peasants during the war and it's heartrending and utterly horrific. Pretty much every army participated in oppressing the people just living in the lands, which were often done for celebration of victory or anger over defeat. It's nearly as bad as was the Soviets did when they invaded Eastern Europe and Germany at the end of WW2

In one of your own videos about the HRE you point out that Habsburg needed four out of seven electors to determine the emperor, why are you not mentioning this most relevant aspect when describing the causes of the 30 year war? Bohemia switching to protestantism would have terminated Habsburg rule in the empire.

I love your videos, I didnt know my country actually started this and the swedish sieged our capital once etc. School never taught me much about the thirty years war and we were taught that the battle at the white mountain was a different conflict. Thank you!

During the war Switzerland and northern Italy still technically were part of the HRE. After the war, the HRE was unofficially converted into a mere confederation, and lost Switzerland and their last Italian lands.

If I had a dollar for everytime a representative was thrown out of a window in Prague for religious reasons, I'd have three dollars. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened thrice.

If it wasn't for Sabaton I would have no knowledge of what was going on in Europe at this time. English colonies were getting started in North America and that's all our history classes focus on.

-It was the third defenestration of Prague and not the second.
-Matthias was still in charge during the defenestration: the succession was in 1619 not 1617.

You forgot about the fact that Christian IV was forbidden to join the war as King of Denmark by the council of nobles, so he decided to join the war as duke of Schleswig-Holstein instead!

Apparently, Descartes was at the battle of Bila Hora (White Mountain) while he was going though his mercenary phase. And students from Charles University fought off the Swedish in Prague.

Sweden finally gave up all its claims to German territory as late as in 1903 when Sweden refrained from getting Wismar back which it had pledged to a smaller german state in 1803.

It was actually a third defenestration of Prague, the second one was 135 years ago and the first one was 199 years ago, all were because of the feud between protestants and catholics
