This video is inherently flawed in its research. Did you attempt to read the actual translations of the Second Lateran Council The document _doesn't_ specifically ban crossbows. It bans the use of ALL projectile weapons including but not limited to crossbows, bows, javelins, and slings when fighting against other Christians. Here is the actual translated text of the 29th canon of the Second Lateran Council sourced from Fordham University: We forbid under penalty of anathema that that deadly and God-detested art of slingers and archers be in the future exercised against Christians and Catholics.

With melee weapons, it was common to for one party to get slightly injured, surrender and be taken hostage. This was especially common for nobles who would fetch a much higher ransom.
You can't really surrender to an arrow/bolt, so there was a higher chance ranged exchanges would end. fatally.
My guess why crossbows were banned and not all bows, was bows took years of training to use effectively, crossbows allowed a similar level of power to be available to anyone who had access to a crossbow and maybe a few weeks to practice.

Crossbows are terrifying because unlike with bows, anyone with an hour of training can become fairly competent.
Your army of 30 knights in full plate will be full plate pin cushions when 200 illiterate peasants come at them with homemade crossbows.
Chances are the whole should crossbows be banned debate came down to the horrifying realization that it kinda outclasses a guy who spent his entire life training for very specific, high tech warfare that just became obsolete because someone stuck a bow on a stick.

Learning to use a crossbow is much easier than to be able to use something like a proper English longbow.
You can give any peasant a crossbow and in a few weeks he can be proficient with it. Making it much easier to raise an army with such weapons.
To use a longbow requires years of practice. Ideally from a young age so the muscles and bones involved can become adapted to use the largest war bows.
If you ban crossbows in theory it makes it harder to field many missile troops.

it's like in japan in 1603 as the era of waring states came to an end the winners were very upset by the idea of commoners with a musket could shoot a noble samurai from the saddle, so instead of changing tactics as the europeans did they just collected all the guns and pretended they didn't exist. worked great until the 1860's and no one knew how to use the port cannons to keep the americans out

I find it funny that the pope actually thought he could convince people to give up missile weapons when their literally how early humans hunted animals. Like dude there are some things that are just inherit to being human, finding easier ways of doing things is one of them and it doesn't get much easier then aim, shoot, reload and repeat

Seen from a class struggle paradigm crossbows are bad for nobility because poorly trained peasants can withstand the well armored elites. However muskets were even better and it’s no wonder that nationalism and mass conscription arose during the Napoleonic era which lead to a steady erosion of elite power.

Considering how many wars were fought by Christians against other Christians because they each believed their version of being a Christian was the right way and the other side was being Christian wrong way surely how the killed their fellow Christians was the least of their worries.

An archer trains constantly all their life to acquire and maintain his skill with a bow. a crossbow can be taught in a day with weekly or monthly drills to maintain the skill. So yep, the crossbow might be slower but is a better weapon for a ruler wanting an army on the cheap.

Everyone always talks about James Bisonette but no one ever even mentions spinning 3 plates or even care to ask how or why he is spinning those 3 plates. These are the real questions that need answering people!

Fun fact: some nobles and even kings were actually proficient with bows. Two examples thar come to mind were William Wallace and Richard I. The Lionheart actually led the attack on Acre, crossbow in hand.

I want to make it known to all that there wasnt plate armor at that time.
Mail armor was the standard for knights
Plate armor would develop later, proper full plate armor is 14th-16th.

The Pope that enacted the original ban on crossbows must've been horrified when he looked down from heaven and saw that those Christian kingdoms had developed firearms

Imagine banning a weapon in order to lessen the amounts of Christians that die only to be told by the kings yeah they’re Christian. But they’re French too.
