Why did the Dutch Empire Collapse?

Why did the Dutch Empire Collapse? I hated the Dutch put all the colonies to unity together and then left them falling apart in the hands of a new government acting in the name of nationalist but corrupt and idiotic.
In the past, the archipelago was never one, each had its own island kingdom, with its customs, unique resources, they were economically healthy.
The archipelago system had to be federally autonomous, perhaps each kingdom would still exist today to govern itself and of course it would be easier to build small states in parallel than a centralized government system that always dehydration of capital resources.
Far away in the city, politicians and leaders who do not represent the interests of local society often make policies that do not represent local interests\r\n

This was not great. Didn't bring up Belgian independence. Didn't mention the continuing Dutch territory in the Carribean. Suriname/Dutch Guyana barely got mentioned. Doesn't mention the New York agreement at all. The Dutch had part of New Guinea until 1963. I was hoping this video might ponder the question of whether the events of the 1960s should be considered a decolonisation or a transfer of imperial power from the Netherlands to Indonesia. (Local opinion not necessarily favouring union with Indonesia)

I always did wonder about this. So it seems the long answer is that almost two thirds of their more lucrative overseas colonies were lost in a series of wars with other colonial powers, the other third were overthrown by local powers, and they were invaded in their homeland during the early 19th century, and the rest of it was lost when during the mid 20th centuries everyone decided empires weren't cool anymore.
The short answer is the British yoinked most of it, as they're want to do

I did not particularly like this presentation. Everything is narrated 'in a hurry' with no nuances, just a list of events with dates. This is why I never liked history in school. The way events are presented can make history either tedious or fascinating. Unfortunately this video belongs more to the former category. Sorry.

The dutch were formidable in any war they were in back in the days, they weren't a pushover. A nation with balls of steel fighting several nations that were many times larger in size and manpower, finally achieving the peak where they are now and They made sure that they left their mark wherever they have been.

You forgot about Janmayen, spitsbergen (Northern Company, abc islands (caribean, dutch belize and Ghana (for short period, Mauritius and the discovery of Australia and NZ (never claimed. We let a lot to the british but in change britain accepted our rule over the east-indies archipel.

Very interesting. Whatever one may feel about colonisation it must be said the Dutch are a people to be respected. Whether it is against the forces of nature, dam construction or their world trading presence today the NLs is a force to be reckoned with.

The Japanese admiral who was the supreme commander of the Japanese Army and Navy forces in Dutch East Indies, signed a decree granting independence to the archipelago, one day after Japan signed its unconditional surrender.

It didn't collapse until 1950 actually. it just didn't grow bigger like the English empire did, lucky us. We even survived Napoleon, though we lost Suid-Afrika and Ceylon to the English after the French occupation.

I initially thought the Dutch were a force for good but after speaking to several Indonesians, I realised they were just as cruel and exploitive as the French and Spanish. Thank God for independence movement!
reply

Empire? Having coast cities here and there doesn't make it an empire. They only territory that they really conquered like a real empire would do was Indonesia, and lasted very short period of time.

Good job, but pronunciation of place names needs a lot of work(big time flub ups) and since it's about Da Dutch maybe use Dutch place names ie: Fort Orange instead of Albany
reply

I mean to be fair, they still have quite a few Island holdings in the Caribbeans, the Dutch Empire really just got smaller and rebranded itself as the kingdom of the Netherlands.

6: 28 - You should have included the Habsburg Netherlands (Belgium) on that map. You make it look loke Flanders is part of France when it was also invaded by the French army

So many of European decent have a ting of contempt when they say Rome or Roman.
If it wasn't for Catholics Europe would have been Muslims about nine hundred years ago.

reply

Tbh the Dutch empire was kinda weak. Idk even know how they were able to beat Portugal. Portugal did more than the Dutch. Yet the Dutch got a hold of them.

Btw we won the most battles against the brits and took their flagship just saying that we always have bean better
And the brits were just jealous

reply

Easy. Napoleon conquered it. Then the Germans did. Not surprising that if the homeland keeps getting occupied the colonies go away.
