The History of New York in 12 Minutes So much misinformation here -
- New York City was a loyalist hotbed during the Revolution. Washington was unable to take control of the city until the end of the war. Only Long Island and Upstate New York were friendly to Patriots.
- The U. S. Constitution was based on Virginia-s own state constitution. The Father of the Constitution, Virginian James Madison, was no fan of New York.
- New York was chosen as a temporary Capitol only until one could be constructed in Washington
- New York was not a hotbed of abolitionism. In fact, New York did not even outlaw slavery - like most other Northern states - until the mid 19th century. In fact, New York held a great number of Confederate sympathizers (like Fernando Wood) who advocated for the right of the South to secede, just as the Colonies has seceded from Britain. New York itself had considered secession on more than one occasion since 1789.
- New York City not only rioted after the 1863 draft, but rioted after the Emancipation Proclamation and hung thousands of Black men in the city streets. They viewed the Proclamation as a distortion of the war, which was not being fought to free slaves (D. C. itself had slavery, along with several other Union states, but to preserve the country against secession.\r\n

You are incorrect about the time line of the capital of New York.
In 1777, Kingston NY was designated as the first capital of New York. In 1785 New York City was made the last capital under the Articles of Confederation and the first US capital under the Constitution of the United States. This is why Washington was inaugurated in the City in 1789. It wasn't until 1797 that Albany became the second (and current) capital of our state.
So if you ever see a beer called Old Capital by the brewing company Keegan Ales (located in Kingston, NY, toast to our amazing state and her first capital, beautiful Kingston!

I'm a Western New Yorker (Buffalo area, and I love NY. Most of it anyways. I've been to about 18 different states and I really think New York is the most beautiful out of all the ones I've been to. Southwest Virginia is a very close 2nd though. I just wish NYC wasn't apart of the state. It should be its own state/territory. NYC has nothing in common with 90% of the rest of New York, yet they completely dominate our state's politics and control our way of life. They'd have more control of their lives, and we'd have more control of ours. Everyone wins.

In 1524, a French employed Verrazzano. really? Oh please, do your research. It was the king of France at the time who sent him. And NYC as a result was called New Angouleme. There is a plaque at the French consulate in NYC mentioning it. And FYI Angouleme is a town in west southern France. I know it well because this is where I was born, and now living in NJ. And the only reason why I watched this video is because I knew this information would be missing. Please do your research. An -employee-. how insulting.

How did you mess up the location of Albany that badly by putting it downstate? Albany was chosen because of its location as being near where the Hudson River meets the mowhawk River to make it easer for representatives across the state to meet in a more convenient position instead of making representatives from buffalo travel all the way down the mowhawk AND the hudson to get to nyc

This might be the worst and most Eurocentric propagandized story of the history or New York I have yet to come across. We will be using g this video in history and Ela class as an example of historical lies and total omissions of the truth about what happened to indigenous peoples in the Americas. Wow this is just so bad. Amazing.
reply

Some of your maps are inaccurate, exaggerating the size of the USA at key points. You gloss over the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the native Americans. Is this history or propaganda? No wonder that most Americans fail to recognise that their country is a colonial empire, the USA just got rid of the inconvenient natives.

Been a NYer for over 45 years. Still have the home there but TX is now my primary residence. TX is also a state with a long and influential history. one that is going to be more so in the coming years/decades. If you haven't already, consider doing a similar overview of the history of TX.

The graphic artist or mapmaker did not place Albany anywhere near it's true location. That person out it where modern-day Westchester is located. It needs placing about 90 miles north of where it is on this yellow, blue, ivory, and red map of North America.

a slight correction: The europeans did not stumble on the new world. The new world was known by African sailors for thousands of years. Look at the currents that flow from Africa to America to Europe. there are also ancient africans boats.

The mortgage is destroying New York, increasing the price of residence and of business far beyond what any market can conceivably bear. To save New York, we must #AbolishTheMortgage with a permanent moratorium on new mortgages!

That was quite informative and very interesting. I'd like to see a history of the geology and geography of that area, such as how it may have looked 500 years ago, 300 years ago, etc and how humans changed the shape of the land.

New York State was the center of the world from 1920 through 1970. A leader in manufacturing, finance, high tech, arts, entertainment, food, fashion, advertising, energy exporter and transportation - what happened?
reply

I love my State & City. All through American History NY State has been on the CORRECT side of History. Even when it comes to the Iraq & Civil wars.
To All other New Yorkers. i don't Know you. but You are my Family

Washington and Baltimore are switched locations. -
And, Charleston is misspelled as -Carleston! -
What?
Where was the proofreader when this video was reviewed?
Was it reviewed?

reply

FYI: Washington DC is roughly 45 miles south of Baltimore, yet your map seems to indicate it-s the other way around. I realize this video is about New York, however, this is a glaring inaccuracy.
reply

This video is full of inaccuracies. New York was a staunch loyalist territory. New York's delegation to the continental congress abstained from the vote for independence because of this.
reply

Loving the video so far, but why on the map does it show Albany being so south, only a little more north than NYC? Albany is almost half way up north the state towards Montreal
reply

A correction on this. New York City was not the capital of New York State. Kingston was the capital until it was burnt down by the British, and then moved to Albany.
reply

Great video. I have something to add. I found a video about the connection between New York (USA) and the Netherlands. Its -Russell Shorto & Dutch-American Heritage Day-
reply

You missed the fact that vikings (Leif the lucky) were the first Europeans to discover North America. But it seems like most Americans skip that part for some reason.
reply

NY city was not NY state first capital
Kingston NY was NY first capital.
When British came to burn Kingston NY. Then Albany NY became NY state capital

reply

You put Albany near present day Kingston which I'm told was at one point the State Capital before Albany. Overall very interesting short video.
reply

Nice video over all. But all of the video was about New york City, not the rest of New york like the upstate New York, Adirondack, or Buffalo
reply

Your graphic locates Albany way too close to NYC. It's considerably farther North up the Hudson River at the junction of the Mohawk River.
reply

Albany starting at 8: 12 is represented too far south.
Wash DC is actually south of Baltimore.
Video really needs to be edited.

reply

I'm a Black man who's almost 50 years old, born and raised in NYC, (Harlem, but never knew any of this till now. if it's true that is.
reply

Biased knowledge. This was Imperialism. Don-t forget that these European countries violently forced out the indigenous people.
