Why was Turkey Neutral in WW2? Dear International Readers! There are some comments that Ottoman Empire was a -happy mix- of equal other Peoples of different ethnicities and beliefs with the Ottoman Turks that is Another Distortion of History made by Turkish Propaganda! They want to convince us that -modern- Turkey is not the continuity of Ottoman Empire with other mask! How much do you want dear Turk commentators to crazy us?
In essence Greeks, Serbs and other Occupied Peoples were under barbarian slavery for 400 or more years! They were absolutely NOT equal in political and human Rights terms to the master Turks in Ottoman Empire! Neither as a joke you can tell such crude lies! In Law Science we call that they were just -Objects- and not -Subjects- of the Ottoman State!
I repeat: They were just occupied objects under the absolute dominance of their master Turks and were not recognized as people! They were living under the hard ottoman yoke with no human dignity!
If Greeks were living as equals to Turks why they tried at least 10 failed insurrections in the 4 Centuries of their slavery before their Great Revolution of 1821 that ended in the Greek Independence after 10 years of blooded battles and sacrifices and suffering?
How ungrateful are those Greeks that were so blessed ) under the -noble- Ottoman Occupation. What a hoax!
Of course Turks used some of the literate skillful Greeks for their diplomatic and other public Services in Constantinople but it is not due to the -good heart- of Sultan but due to necessity!
One main Reason of Turkish Propaganda trying to distinguish Ottoman Turkey from Turkey after 1923, is because they want to atone themselves about the 3 Genocides made by Turks: their Genocide against the Greeks of Pontos and Greeks of Asia Minor, their Genocide against Armenians and their Genocide against Assyrians! The last 30 years there is a fourth on-going Genocide against Kurdish People!
Remember that Genocides is recognized by UN as an International Crime against HUMANITY because the only -Crime- of the Victims was that they were born as Greeks or Armenians or Assyrians or Jews!
The day of 9th of December each year have been declared by United Nations as The International Day for the Memory of the Victims of Genocides!
Only when Modern Turkey would recognise the responsibility of her Genocides and ask a sincere -Sorry- from the Peoples fulfilling at the same time all other legal implications, only then we could say that Turkey will have a place in Humanity!
Lets hope that sometime official Turkey will join civilized World!\r\n

But things might have been different if German General Rommel had beaten the British Army at El Aleman.
He could have closed the Suez Canal to the vitally needed British supply convoys from Asia containing Rubber, Oil, and Food. But most importantly, the Germans would have had total access to the oil fields of the Middle East.
Of course the easiest way to transport that oil was through Turkey and the German occupied Balkans via trucks.
What had crippled the German War Machine was this lack of oil and gasoline for their tanks, warplanes and other transportation.
Also, once the Germans had been defeated, Stalin would have had nothing to stop him from sending two million men from his Red Army coupled with thousands of tanks and artillery to conquer Constantinople/Istanbul. Stalin did not like nations that stabbed him in the back. It would have been easier than hot knife through butter. Oh, the Greeks and the Armenians would have loved that too, after suffering mass atrocities by the Turks.

Turkish Republic-s foreign policy was designed by our first president and founder of republic Mustafa Kemal Ataturk with the sentence -Peace at home, peace in the world-. He created two pacts with our neighbors during 1930s, one of them Balkan Pact, the other Sadabad Pact. This secured peace within neighbors in the Balkans and Middle East. He had foreseen a world war before he passed away in 1938 and advised the key people not to be a part of any global pact with world powers. He helped Jewish scientists who ran away from Nazi regime after he received a letter from Einstein. This Jewish professors established many universities in the young Republic which boosted science in Turkey. Turkey also helped Greeks during the war who were starving to death during German occupation. We are proud of our history which was extremely important to be the first successful example for the nations fighting with imperialism and fighting for freedom. Gandhi and Castro clearly mentioned about this.

If Turkey joined the war after the Fall of Greece, a middle eastern front would open. Syria and Iraq who was fighting against Britain anyway would be taken. UK might have lost egypt. Baku would fall once germany start operation barbarossa, stalingrad and kursk wouldn't happen since the point of stalingrad was to take caucasian oil fields and kursk was about revenge of stalingrad. Iran wouldn't be invaded since axis would have borders to help iran. Germans could've won.

Turkey hated the armenians feeling like they were sabatoged by the armenenians just like how germany hated the nazis They also lost the balkan war and lost its empire They probably would have had q dude named Hasac cetin as dictator trying to invade bulgaria and greece and ethnically-cleansing against Armenia but would have lost against greece and bulgaria

WWII left tens of millions of military and civilian deaths, millions of women raped, many cities destroyed, many war crimes were committed. Considering all of these, managing(or even struggling) to stay neutral was the best strategy in history of wars.

Germany: Fight with us, we are friends from ww1.
Turkey: Aaah, at ww1 you lost the war, we payed the bill most.
England: Fight with us, help democracy.
Turkey: Didn't you send greeks to invade our country before? No, thanks.

reply

Because they were cowards. As they are now. Bombing innocent Kurds, grabbing northern part of Cyprus, threating to grab our islands. Butchering Armenians. And on and on. A country with criminal record not history. .

The reason why Turkey did not participate in the war is a great political success. though yugoslavia was also occupied at the end of the war so just like france
reply

I think giving back the Antioch would be a reason they didn't join the Axis. For that reason they could have asked for Allepo either, but they didn't.

In summary: A 16-year-old state (16 years before it was founded) could not survive the 2nd world war because it was tired of fighting 6 countries alone.
reply

It wasn't founded as a presidential republic but a parliamentary one. There was a prime minister (Isment Inonu mostly) and president (Ataturk until 1938)
reply

Because life never exactly repeats itself Portugal didn't join as it had in 1914 but did allow its bases in the Atlantic to be used by the allies

Turkey was friends with Germany in WW1
I would rather fight for Germany and Turkey then for other Western European Nations!

reply

Turkey was undefeated against the Nazis because the Turks are fond of their independence and never break the rules of war.
reply

Turkey was depleted by decades of wars from 1875 to 1922. We literally had no power or will actually apart from anything else.
reply

long story short: Ismet Inonu wanted to recover the starvation and other reasons in the country so that's why we didnt't join
reply
