The war would have likely lasted another year or two but the end would have been the same. War is immoral if it is entered by those without -clean hands- and leaders of the nations surely lacked them. The Germans failed to heed the knowledge of Sun Tzu and Carl von Clausewitz. The Germans were up against demographics, shortage of petroleum, logistics and insecure communications. The war was lost before it began. Politics is violence and manmade political governments are the bane and pain of mankind; they are not Christian; they are Satan's rot, no matter their makes, models or flavors.

The Germans broke through so fast they had no plans to wipe out the British. The German high command was horrified when their troops moved north, away from the French. They lost the battle of the Marne in 1914 because they had too many troops diverted north to deal with the Belgians. They were not going to make that mistake twice. They deemed the large French army to be the threat, not the tiny British army. The British weren't going anywhere anyway. That they managed to pull off the evacuation was one of the greatest millitary feats off all time.

Sun Tzu wrote in The Art of War,
-When you surround an army, leave an outlet free.
This does not mean that the enemy is to be allowed to escape.
it is to make him believe that there is a road to safety, and thus prevent his fighting with the courage of despair. '
Perhaps at Dunkirk, the Germans took 'The Art Of War' too literally and seriously. If so, it goes to show you don't read books on war strategy from two and half thousand years ago. It's not applicable.

It is clear that the keyboard warriors in the comments are clearly more courageous than the men and women that fought back then! Even in the face of defeat, without hope, most of them fought while today, in the face of a surgical mask, a lot of people were defeated and screeching like if it were the end of the world! Just ignore the keyboard warriors, and remember those that fought during those wars.

Every video i see on this topic always leave out about the 40-50k soldiers that came from the Maginot line to flank the Germans at Dunkirk then continued to pull German troops away from it through France all the way back to St Valery where they were eventually surrounded by Rommel and killed or captured.
It's no wonder they are always referred to as the Forgotten of Dunkirk.

Paris fell AFTER Dunkirk. The French Army was on its heels, and trying to stabilize its lines. War is chaotic and with many unknowns. It would have made sense to keep units available for the attack on Paris, just in case. -- During WWI, Paris was saved by a near miracle. The Germans would have remembered this.

The obvious answer seems to be the nazis knew they had the allies bottled up at Dunkirk and Calais with zero chance of escape. The nazis felt they had time to regroup their over extended supply lines. Who could have anticipated that a fleet of small boats would rescue the troops at Dunkirk?

my guess? I think the Germans saw themselves as invincible at this point.
On the other hand, when you look at English military operations, 'unprepared' is not in their dictionary. they'll give you their best, even on the retreat.

The British have been the boss of Europe since Napoleon lost. France has accepted this fact. Germany after being destroyed twice has also accepted this fact. Those once proud countries are now but vassals of the Anglo-Saxon empire

If it wasn't for the French and a few Scottish regiments dunkirk would have been worse the French and some Scottish regiments held the germans off as long as they could at the battle of Le Paradis, 30 miles from Dunkirk

I don't think the German's probably thought the Brits could evacuate quite as quickly as they did. There is also the problem of what to do with over 300, 000 PoWs captured in one go with your forces already stretched.

I've been studying, reading French languages and culture for ears now and I can never find 3 English words that translate into French 'Stand and fight! ' 2, 017 words for run, hide, we surrender. Strange that isn't it.

So we don't actually know? Crazy. I think poor strategy. Kind of like a bonnie prince Charlie situation. They didn't know they had the advantage and numbers, and erred on the side of caution.

Germany was the guy who had one chance to get the hottest girl but thought he had it in the bag so he didn-t make the move since he figured he could ask her out next week. Too late.

Because, the French Army, along with remnants of the British Expeditionary Force, fought a fighting retreat, savaging many German units while suffering heavy casualties.

The turning point of the war was not at Dunkirk. It was not even in the west. It was in the east at Stalingrad with the surrender of Paulus's Army Group B.

Nice, dancing around the nearly two dozen peace appeals from AH.
I-m sure that had nothing to do with his hesitation in knocking out the BEF

There is a greater question than why didn't the Germans attack, its why didn't the French and British stand and fight like their fathers did.

Why the Germans did not attack? Tell that to the boats, ships and solders. Being ponded by artillery and dive bombers on the beach.
