The sacking of constantinople was the scope of the venetians, from the first moment. After some decades the bones of the leading doge, erico dandolo, were thrown to the streets of the city, for the dogs to eat, by the romans that took back their city, but the damage was done. The romans never recovered from that destruction of the forth crusade, so after 2, 5 centuries the city would eventually fall to the muslims. Everything cause the hungry, barbarian crusaders, leaded by the even hungry venetians and the vatican, wanted to steal everything, they could from the mother city of the west and the christendom, and claim it, after, as their own.

Yes a marvelous victory of losing the only remnant of the ancient world, with all the achievements all the writing material and so on, the living heart and brain of a dead world that stabbed by those who were thirsty for its blood. Egypt, Italy, Greece, Asia, Europe and Carthage all of them were transplanted into Constantinople, other states built on these lands were just without identity of their past.

Only Time will tell, if the Catholics remembered as the ones who broke the Christian Bulwark, or the ones who restore the Rome back to greatness?

To be fair however, Byzantine empire were already in decline through series of dynastic civil wars and the like. Consider it went so far as hiring crusaders to secure its own throne it was only a matter of time before it finally collapses. The Catholics saw a chance at creating a league in the east to replace the declining -Eastern Roman Empire-.

Something no one ever talks about is the Massacre of the Latins that led to what happened in the 4th Crusade. Long story short: there was an anti-Latin (Roman Catholic) pogrom that killed 60, 000 people in a single day. This included murdering people in sickbeds. And it was led/sponsored by the newly usurping Emperor.

Much of classic Roman literature known to us was preserved at this time and carried back to Italy. Included were Aristotle's codex and Euclid's geometry (then unknown in the West. Most famous of all is the holy Shroud of Turin. Thank heaven, a gift to the whole world.

Imagine if Caesar saw this. The last bulwark of the Roman Empire being razed to the ground by Latins. the Rhomaioi/Hellenes were still roman at that point. He would have been confused by how much has changed yet he would have related better to the rhomioi.

I-ve studied this crusade and read books on it by supporters of each side. On a visit to Venice I had a tour guide who spoke of it declaring that Venice -won- the 4th Crusade rather than admit they betrayed Christendom.
