How can a Portuguese be contemplating the sea at beginning of a video wearing a Spanish helmet? OK, that is not the most important issue.
How did Portuguese colonize Madeira with sugar cane cultures prior to reach Brazil?
How could you forgot that Canary islands were discovered by Portuguese too?
How did Portuguese did deforestation Azores islands, prior to bring cultivation land? Yes, some islands like Pico and some other were too rocky to cultivate anything more than a bonsai plant.
Similarities between Madeira Island and Azores is not like you describe. Not at that time. Azores development as habitable islands were quite too difficult and not easy as you present.
Living there on that time I find similarities today planing living in Mars. Far from home land, lack of good communications flow and an environment that want to kill you in different ways.
Prior to Portuguese discover wasnt sustainable to any family grow there in a sustainable way. The first Azores inhabitants were true heroes for many generations.
I believe that author intentions were good, the narrative and images are amazing. But with a little more preparation and less assuming you could do a way lot better than this.\r\n

Ah, the Flemish Islands! Where oxcart and windmills are still seen. Concerning the -relheiras- (rails i suppose, wouldn't be surprised for easier (ox)cart transportation. But why (going seemingly nowwhere particular? This we have all seen with the lineways (lijnbanen) for rope production. They need a track to span the cords, sometimes hundreds of meters. By twisting the different strains, the cord get tighter. Typical machinery to do so, is a moving cart (lopende bok. Azoren were very important hub for further sea-faring, especially tools and equipment were there produced/repaired. Wouldn't be surprised that early advanced rope production was one of the typical activities there.

Came to this video to learn some history of where my family is from. I was on the continent last week and kept seeing my last names on signs in the northern parts of Portugal around Aveiro, Porto, and Braga. Turns out Terceira was actually populated by Northern Portuguese people and Sephardic Jews. Third island to be discovered and thats where the name comes from Terca which means Third in Portuguese. Great video but some of the pronunciation and spelling of the island names were off. Madeira is prounounced (Ma-day-rah. --eir- in Madeira is actually found in a lot of Portuguese words and names.

Why is there so much fuzz about the bad pronounciation of the English presenter? Are we that surprised? :-) I can't imagine another situation where the Anglo-Sax mispronounces consistenly foreign names. France, how do they say it? A la francais, or just as Frens? But the French can't pronounce Flemish words either (Broek-zele became Bruxelles. So do the Portugese when talk about -bacalhau-! That was a joke from the Flemish seaman: -) It is actually a -kabel-jauw- (fish with a cable in his jaw. But the Portugese kept mispronouncing the word, so they said: okay Portugese: for you it is Bacal-hau lol

I'm worried it will be over populated with tourist so I hope the government can preserve it's beautiful nature. For me Azores is like New Zealand had a child with Iceland. I went there for what was suppose to be a 5 day vacation and we stayed for one month,

My daughter, a graduate of SUNY Maritime, visited the Azores while on her training voyage. My daughter speaks fluent Brasilian Portuguese, as my wife is Brasilian. As it turned out, my daughter and her classmates were all treated very well by the people of the Azores, with my daughter as the translator. Whenever my daughter would speak, they could tell my daughter has Brasilian roots.

There's new discovered ruins and artifacts in the Azores Islands that point for a pre portuguese ancient civilization living here thousands of years back. Such as burial piramid shaped stone mounts, arrow heads, symbols and animals carved in stone and even big dragon shaped white stone.

Loved it, as both an Azorean and has someone that loves history as a whole! Fun trivia: the Azores were given that name cus the initial setlers confused the indigenous Kite Birds (we call them Milhafres, a bird of prey that resembles a hawk) with an Azor, a mainland european bird of prey. We have no Azors here -

This video didn't mention the history of African slaves in the Islands that were brought to work on sugar plantations, you had both North African and West African slaves brought to the Islands along with other minority ethnic groups, at one point African slaves made up 10% of Madeiras population

My friend as an Azorian I loved the video, but small correction I feel like I need to do. The Azores were NOT colonized, they were populated. This is because there was no one there when the Portuguese arrived. Just a side note that I would like to do. Thanks for the video!

An otherwise intelligent video, the mistakes in place name spelling and pronunciation are unforgiveable. How hard is it to find a Portuguese speaker to verify it for correctness. I am flying to MADAIRA next week, I hope the pilot knows where it is.

People don't seem to ubderstand that the way he says Madaira instead of Madeira is from the fact he probably heard/watched locals from Madeira pronouncing exactly like that.
I know myself people from Madeira and they do say similarly to -Madaira-

During the 2nd world war we leased an air base to the allies in Azores in order to keep them happy. We also traded with Germany to keep them happy and stay neutral. Despite Salazar being a dictator in this instance he deserves some praise.

You butchered the pronunciation of almost all the Portuguese words in this video. Next time it would be worth an effort to ask someone who speaks the language to help you on how to pronounce and write the names properly.
